Morgan Rielly isn’t leaving any room for doubt about where he stands with the Maple Leafs.
After months of trade talk swirling around his name, the longest-tenured player in Toronto’s blue and white made his position clear on Monday following practice. Rielly said he remains fully committed to the team and wants to keep chasing a championship in Toronto.
“It's not a deep answer or anything. I just love this team.
Whatever the downs are, the challenges, I think the opportunity and the ups outweigh them. I feel very fortunate to be a Maple Leaf and I want to continue that for as long as I can.
I'm extremely happy and grateful to be here now. This is my home.
This is the team that I love and would do anything for. So, I feel very grateful to be here and just really excited to get going.”
Those comments come after a stretch in which speculation around his future became a major talking point. Rielly had been coming off two seasons of regression, and the idea that he might be on the move gained traction. But no deal ever came together, even after Rielly provided the Maple Leafs with a list of preferred destinations.
Now, with the season about to open, the focus shifts back to hockey - and Toronto is expecting Rielly to remain a major part of the defense.
There is still reason to believe he can be useful in a different role than the one he’s carried for much of his Toronto run. He is only two seasons removed from a 58-point season, and the system under Craig Berube did not exactly make life easy for anyone. With Raddysh beside him, Rielly has at least one defender who can help in his own end and also move the puck.
That matters because for years, too much of the burden sat on Rielly’s shoulders. With less responsibility and less pressure to be the one doing everything, he can lean more into the parts of his game that have always made him valuable.
His career numbers still tell a clear story: 549 points in 951 games, including 451 assists. That is not the profile of a player who failed Toronto. It is the profile of a player who has been asked to carry a heavy load.
No one should be expecting him to suddenly return to a 70-point pace, but if he and Raddysh can put together 100 points, that would be a meaningful step forward from what Toronto has gotten over the last decade.
For now, the message from Rielly is simple. The rumors can stop, and the commitment remains.
