Matthew Knies Just Became Untouchable In Toronto

Matthew Knies' impressive performance cements his status as a crucial piece in Toronto's future, making him nearly untouchable in trade talks.

Matthew Knies: The Unmovable Force in Toronto's Future

Matthew Knies has transformed from a potential trade piece into an indispensable cornerstone for the Toronto Maple Leafs. At just 23, this power forward is proving to be the heart of Toronto's roster reset for 2027.

Knies is making waves in the Eastern Conference as one of its top young talents. With 21 goals, 39 assists, and 60 points in 72 games this season, his performance has sparked interest from multiple teams. However, despite Toronto's struggles, trade discussions have consistently fallen short of what the Leafs are willing to entertain.

Among the interested parties are divisional rivals Montreal and Buffalo, who have both shown interest in Knies. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley highlighted top prospects like Montreal's Michael Hage and Buffalo's Radim Mrtka during a press conference. Despite their interest, both teams balked at Toronto's substantial asking price for Knies.

Hage, a standout in Montreal's prospect pool, was drafted 10 spots ahead of Toronto's pick in 2024. Toronto, who ultimately selected Ben Danford, had Hage high on their radar. Even a one-for-one trade involving Knies and Hage was deemed insufficient by Toronto.

Buffalo's Radim Mrtka, a towering 6'6" defenseman, was drafted ninth overall in 2025. While Buffalo is keen to bolster their defense, Mrtka remains a crucial component of their prospect pool, which is otherwise forward-heavy.

For the Maple Leafs, making Knies the foundation rather than a trade chip is crucial. Trading him would suggest a full rebuild rather than a retooling effort. Knies represents the future of the franchise, and letting him go would be a step backward.

If Toronto is serious about a winning future, Knies shouldn't be on the trade block. Instead, he should be celebrated as the key piece around which the team builds its next chapter.
