The Toronto Maple Leafs are feeling the heat after a challenging 2025-26 NHL season. With fans and analysts alike voicing concerns, former NHL player and current analyst Paul Bissonnette has weighed in, urging captain Auston Matthews to stick with the team despite their struggles. On the “Spittin’ Chiclets” podcast, Bissonnette emphasized Matthews' critical role in the franchise, warning that losing him could push the organization towards a rebuild.
Bissonnette believes a strategic retooling over the summer could keep the Leafs in the playoff conversation. "If Matthews isn’t up for a rebuild, they need to retool," he said.
"A lot has to happen this summer to make them relevant again. If they can stay healthy, they still have playoff potential."
Matthews, under contract through the 2027-28 season with a $53 million deal, remains the focal point of the team’s future. Yet, the uncertainty surrounding the team’s direction has sparked discussions about his long-term commitment. Bissonnette insists that retaining Matthews should be the top priority.
Reflecting on Matthews' season, Bissonnette noted, "He’s still their offensive leader, even with a slower scoring pace. Facing top defenders and starting shifts in the defensive zone makes it tough.
But I’m not blaming Matthews-I’m begging him to stay. Without him, it’s rebuild time."
Bissonnette also touched on the pressure facing Maple Leafs management, particularly general manager Brad Treliving. Asset management, he suggested, will be a key factor in evaluating Treliving’s tenure. "Several roster decisions will be scrutinized after the season," Bissonnette pointed out, indicating that the front office faces significant decisions in the upcoming summer.
Currently, the Leafs hold a 27-26-11 record, sitting near the bottom of the Atlantic standings. A seven-game losing streak post-Olympic break has dimmed their playoff prospects. Bissonnette believes that without a quick retool, keeping Matthews for the long haul could become increasingly difficult.
