Maple Leafs Sign Vincent Borgesi But There's a 2026 Twist

The Toronto Maple Leafs invest in promising defenceman Vincent Borgesi, securing his talents with a two-year deal and immediate entry into the AHL with the Marlies.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a strategic move by signing defenseman Vincent Borgesi to a two-year contract starting in the 2026-27 season. This promising young talent will first join the AHL’s Toronto Marlies for the rest of the 2025-26 season on an amateur tryout.

Borgesi's deal comes with an average annual value of $987.5K, including signing bonuses of $97.5K in the first year and $100K in the second. At 22, Borgesi may not be the biggest player on the ice, standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 185 pounds, but he compensates with remarkable agility and speed. His recent stint as captain of the Northeastern University Huskies showcased his leadership and skill, as he led all defensemen on his team with 20 points in 36 games, earning a nomination for the 2026 Hobey Baker Award.

Borgesi’s game is defined by his high hockey IQ, allowing him to make smart plays on both ends of the ice. His offensive prowess is particularly noteworthy, with the ability to maneuver along the blueline and maintain puck control. Defensively, he’s adept at blocking shots and using his speed to disrupt opposing plays.

Steven Ellis from Daily Faceoff highlighted Borgesi’s potential, noting his productive collegiate career and smart playmaking abilities. While initially seen as a depth addition for the Marlies, this signing could hold more significance for the Leafs down the road.

Despite not being drafted, Borgesi caught the eye of several NHL teams, earning invites to development camps with the Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, and Florida Panthers. His leadership skills were further recognized when he captained the U.S. Collegiate Selects Team at the 2025 Spengler Cup, leading them to the final.

Over his 134-game collegiate career, Borgesi racked up an impressive 80 points, underscoring his consistent performance and potential impact in the professional arena. This signing reflects the Maple Leafs’ commitment to nurturing young talent and building depth within their roster.
