The Toronto Maple Leafs’ front office was hit with a major shakeup on Thursday, and the biggest name in the group was Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser.
By the end of the day, 14 personnel members were out as General Manager John Chayka pushed through a sweeping overhaul across management, player development, scouting, and analytics. Early reports pointed to the exits of Assistant General Manager of Hockey Research & Development Darryl Metcalf and Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Leach, but Wickenheiser’s departure became the headline.
Wickenheiser, who joined the Maple Leafs in 2018 and spent eight seasons with the organization, addressed the move directly on social media. In her statement, she said the split came after discussions with Chayka about her role and a difference in direction.
“For the past eight seasons, it has been an incredible honor to work for the Toronto Maple Leafs . Over the last few days, John Chayka and I had several discussions about my role moving forward.
During those conversations, my expectation was that I would be in a position to continue to have a significant impact within the organization . However, it became clear that his leadership group envisioned a different path.
Since joining the club in 2018, I have been immensely proud of the work our player development team has accomplished. I want to sincerely thank the incredibly talented individuals, coaches, management, and players whom I have been fortunate enough to work alongside over the last eight years. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity, wish the team nothing but the best moving forward, and look forward to the next chapter.”
Chayka also released a statement explaining the organizational changes. He said the club had gone through an evaluation and made difficult decisions that were not a reflection of the people affected.
“As part of our ongoing evaluation of the organization, we have made the difficult decision to part ways with some valued colleagues," Chayka said ]. "These decisions were not easy and are not a reflection of the commitment of the impacted people ]. We are sincerely grateful for everything they have contributed to this organization and wish them nothing but the very best in the future.”
The changes are expected to continue reshaping the hockey research and analytics side, with several of those positions believed to be filled in the coming weeks.

Why Alexander Bilecki Could Be A Sneaky Leafs Blue Line Find
Alexander Bilecki has spent the past two seasons with the Kitchener Rangers, and the Maple Leafs have reason to keep a close eye on how his game keeps trending. The defenseman, taken 60th overall, was part of a Rangers team that won both the OHL championship and the Memorial Cup, and his role in that run was hard to miss as the playoff games got bigger.
What stands out most is how much more dangerous he looked in the postseason this spring, when he piled up 11 points in 18 playoff games after a quieter run a year ago. Bilecki still has development time ahead of him before he gets anywhere near Torontos AHL affiliate, but the combination of offensive growth and winning experience gives him a profile the Leafs can dream on a little longer. Maple Leafs Push For Veteran Upgrade As Familiar Cap Tension Builds
The Maple Leafs have kept the roster moving this summer, but the work in front of them still points to the same need: another top-six forward who can fit either at center or on the wing. John Chayka and Toronto have been weighing trade possibilities and free-agent options, and insider David Pagnotta said the club is still exploring ways to upgrade while also leaving room to adjust with players already on the roster.
The challenge, as always, is the cap. Any meaningful addition appears to come with the kind of financial juggling that can force a current player out first, and Toronto still has to be compliant by the start of the season. Veteran names have surfaced in the conversation, including some from Anaheim, but the Leafs are clearly still in the stage where possibilities are being sorted out before anything becomes real.
