Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Alexander Bilecki is heading into the 2026-27 season with a bigger voice in the room.
The 18-year-old defenseman was named an assistant captain by the Kitchener Rangers, a step up that comes after a solid first full look in the organization’s pipeline. Bilecki, the 60th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, is still a work in progress, but his game and his standing with the Rangers are both moving in the right direction.
Bilecki joined captain Andrew MacNiel and fellow assistant Luca Romano in the leadership group. MacNiel is in the Canadiens organization, while Romano is part of the Islanders pipeline.
On the ice, Bilecki put up 29 points in 66 games last season, with nine goals. Over 111 career OHL games, he has 43 points. That kind of production fits the profile of an offensive defender who likes to drive play, jump into the attack, and trust his instincts with the puck.
That aggressiveness is part of the appeal. Bilecki is a ferocious puck carrier, he likes to pinch, and he plays with the confidence to try things other defenders won’t. The upside is obvious, even if the rough edges are still there.
The defensive side needs polish, especially his positioning. He had some trouble during the Prospect Showcase, including a blown tire that turned into a 3-on-0 chance for the other team. But he’s still early in the process, and there’s plenty of time for that part of his game to settle down.
For the Maple Leafs, the bigger picture is pretty clear. Bilecki is one of several puck-moving defenders in the system, with Ethan MacKenzie also trying to work his way into the conversation. Noah Chadwick, Vinny Borgesi, and Emil Andrae are also in the mix, which makes the climb steeper.
Even so, Bilecki could end up being a useful fit next to Ben Danford down the line. Danford is expected to try to make noise with the Marlies this season, and Bilecki could follow a similar path in 2027-28, putting himself closer to an NHL opportunity.
For now, though, there’s no need to rush him. He is blocked from both an AHL and NHL job, and another season in junior should only help. The focus now is simple: see how he handles the extra responsibility with Kitchener, because if he leads well and keeps producing, the Maple Leafs picture gets a little clearer.
