The Maple Leafs traded a sixth-round pick in 2026 to secure Webber's signing rights from the Carolina Hurricanes back in 2024, banking on his shutdown capabilities. Named Best Defensive Defenseman in Hockey East for the 2023-24 season, Webber impressed while paired with Lane Hutson. “I take pride in being that defensive defenseman, blocking shots, doing the unsexy things,” Webber remarked during the Maple Leafs development camp in July 2024. “That’s a big thing here.
I know that they’re going to put all they can into developing me. I know this is just the beginning.
I have a ton of more work to do. I’m looking forward to that.”
With his contract extending through next season, Webber has time to refine other areas of his game and climb the ranks for potential call-ups. His path to the NHL hinges on consistently winning puck battles and demonstrating NHL-ready skills, even if his offensive numbers don't shine.
Making the leap to the NHL isn't easy, especially for players who excel in one area. However, Webber could be the exception, potentially earning his shot later this season, particularly with the Leafs' playoff hopes dimming.
