Maple Leafs Prospect Cade Webber Stuns Fans With Unexpected Season Development

Cade Webber's defensive prowess is under the spotlight as the Maple Leafs evaluate his progress in the AHL, balancing injury setbacks with his key shutdown role.

When evaluating Toronto Maple Leafs defensive prospect Cade Webber, it's clear that his impact goes beyond the numbers on the stat sheet. With just one assist in 26 games for the AHL's Toronto Marlies, it's easy to overlook Webber's contributions if you're only focused on scoring.

But for those familiar with his style, this lack of offensive production is no surprise. Webber is a classic defensive defenseman, having put up seven points in 60 games the previous year.

Webber's limited game count this season is due to injuries and illness, which have kept him off the ice. When healthy, he's mostly been paired with Noah Chadwick on the Marlies' second pair, though he's occasionally been called up to the top pair.

The Maple Leafs traded a sixth-round pick in 2026 to secure Webber's signing rights from the Carolina Hurricanes back in 2024, banking on his shutdown capabilities. Named Best Defensive Defenseman in Hockey East for the 2023-24 season, Webber impressed while paired with Lane Hutson. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 220 pounds, his physical presence is hard to ignore, and the Leafs saw potential in his development.

While Webber might not be known for delivering bone-crushing hits, he effectively uses his size to disrupt opponents entering the offensive zone. His skating ability and spatial awareness are standout traits, especially given his size.

“I take pride in being that defensive defenseman, blocking shots, doing the unsexy things,” Webber remarked during the Maple Leafs development camp in July 2024. “That’s a big thing here.

I know that they’re going to put all they can into developing me. I know this is just the beginning.

I have a ton of more work to do. I’m looking forward to that.”

With his contract extending through next season, Webber has time to refine other areas of his game and climb the ranks for potential call-ups. His path to the NHL hinges on consistently winning puck battles and demonstrating NHL-ready skills, even if his offensive numbers don't shine.

Making the leap to the NHL isn't easy, especially for players who excel in one area. However, Webber could be the exception, potentially earning his shot later this season, particularly with the Leafs' playoff hopes dimming.
