Maple Leafs Prospect Borya Valis Stuns Fans After Five Months in 2025-26

Despite being undrafted, Borya Valis is carving out a promising path with the Toronto Maple Leafs, showcasing potential and resilience in his rookie pro season.

In the world of junior hockey, not getting drafted to the NHL isn’t the end of the road. Many players have paved their own way, like Mark Giordano, who wrapped up his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs and now contributes to the Toronto Marlies. Each year, a few undrafted players make a splash, and in 2024-25, Borya Valis did just that, earning a contract with the Leafs.

Valis, a Los Angeles native, spent five years grinding it out in the WHL. His journey started with the Regina Pats and concluded with the Prince George Cougars.

Despite showing offensive promise early on, defensive issues and stagnant development kept him out of the draft spotlight. But his overage season was a game-changer, as he racked up 34 goals and 47 assists, totaling 81 points in 66 games.

His playoff performance in 2023-24, scoring nine goals and 13 points in 15 games, also turned some NHL heads.

Now in his first professional season, Valis has faced the ups and downs of consistency. With ten goals and 16 points in 41 games, his rookie stats aren't shabby, but his production has been streaky.

He started strong with two goals in the opener and another pair in the third game, tallying seven points in the first ten games. However, a 20-game slump followed, yielding just one goal and three points.

Recently, he’s shown signs of life with six points in his last 11 games.

Valis finds himself in an intriguing spot. While he may not be stepping into a key role with the Leafs soon, his improved defensive play and potential as a bottom-six energy forward increase his chances for a call-up. Although NHL ice time this season seems unlikely, a strong finish and start next year could see him competing for NHL minutes in 2026-27.
