The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a strategic move by signing defenseman Hayes Hundley to a three-year, entry-level contract, set to kick off in the 2026-27 season. This young talent will first showcase his skills with the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs’ AHL affiliate, for the rest of the 2025-26 season on an amateur tryout.
Hundley, standing at an imposing 6-foot-3, made a significant impact at St. Thomas University during the 2025-26 season, tallying six goals and six assists over 38 games. His performance earned him a spot on the CCHA All-Rookie Team, highlighting his potential on the ice.
Before his college stint, the Upper Arlington, Ohio native played for the USHL’s Fargo Force in the 2024-25 season. There, he notched four goals and 12 assists, amassing 74 penalty minutes over 58 games. His physical style of play and ability to read the game have been key attributes throughout his career.
According to prospect analyst Steven Ellis, the Leafs have been strategically bolstering their lineup with larger defensemen from the college ranks. Hundley fits this mold perfectly.
Ellis describes him as an aggressive blueliner who excels in physical play, penalty killing, and shot-blocking. While he may not be known for his offensive production, his defensive prowess and ability to force opponents to the perimeter make him a valuable asset.
With several teams showing interest, the Leafs' acquisition of Hundley could prove to be a savvy move, potentially adding depth to their defensive lineup. His journey with the Marlies will be one to watch as he aims to transition into a solid bottom-pairing defender in the NHL.
