Connor Hellebuyck’s trade request has opened the door to plenty of speculation, but one lane appears to be closed: a Canadian destination.
On “32 Thoughts,” Elliotte Friedman said Hellebuyck’s list of possible landing spots is broader than most players who ask for a move, but he still doesn’t see the Winnipeg Jets goalie ending up north of the border. “Connor Hellebuyck's of where he's willing to go is much much wider than some of the other players who've asked for trades; obviously I don't think he's going to a Canadian team”
That matters for clubs like the Toronto Maple Leafs, even if they were never seriously tied to him in the first place. There were no reports suggesting Toronto was in on Hellebuyck, and with two goaltenders already in place, the fit was never obvious.
The Leafs’ current tandem is Sergei Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz. It’s a group that looks sturdy on paper, with Stolarz two years removed from the best season of his career and still offering upside as a backup. Bobrovsky, meanwhile, brings a three-year deal with a full no-trade clause and two Stanley Cup championships - the kind of experience Toronto has been chasing for years.
Put simply, Hellebuyck would be a luxury, not a need.
For Winnipeg, though, the situation is far less comfortable. Darren Dreger said the offers coming in for Hellebuyck have been “terrible.”
Hellebuyck has widened the field of teams he’d accept a move to, but that hasn’t translated into a bidding war. The clubs in play apparently aren’t eager to pay a major premium, which leaves the Jets in a tough spot since Hellebuyck is the one pushing to leave.
That’s the reality for Winnipeg as one of its franchise cornerstones looks for an exit. Hellebuyck’s trade request remains one of the more intriguing storylines to watch as the season gets underway on September 29.
