Maple Leafs Get A Needed Jake McCabe Boost After Scary Injury

Jake McCabe's unexpected return to the ice provides the injury-riddled Maple Leafs a crucial boost as they face off against the formidable New York Rangers.

The Maple Leafs got a timely boost Thursday morning, and it came from a familiar face. Jake McCabe was back at practice after leaving Tuesday’s game looking badly cut up, and all signs point to him being ready to rejoin the lineup against the Rangers.

Toronto has spent plenty of time dealing with injuries already this season. Max Domi is out for the long-haul, Dakota Joshua is nowhere to be seen, John Tavares and Chris Tanev could both be sidelined for a few weeks, and McCabe himself exited Tuesday’s game in rough shape. With Tavares and Tanev still not close to returning, getting McCabe back is a needed break for a team that has been forced to shuffle hard just to stay afloat.

At practice, McCabe was skating on the first pair alongside Darren Raddysh, a strong sign that the injury won’t keep him out any longer than Tuesday night. He was still sporting a serious shiner, though, which made the damage look even worse than it turned out to be. The good news is that there was no orbital injury involved - just a slice, unpleasant as that surely was.

McCabe, 32, has yet to put up a point in 11 games this season, but his value has shown up in the harder stuff: 21 blocks and 15 hits. With Tanev out, Toronto needs that kind of steady, defensive-minded presence even more. It also takes some pressure off others, including Troy Stecher, who won’t have to be leaned on for 26 minutes on Thursday.

The timing matters because the Rangers have come out flying. They’re 7-3-1, sitting second in the Metropolitan, and Alexis Lafrenière is finally delivering the breakout season people have been waiting for. They’ve done it, too, without Igor Shesterkin, who is out for the rest of the season after awkwardly going down following a save and later requiring surgery.

McCabe’s return should help Toronto’s effort to slow that attack, including Lafrenière, while another matchup to watch is how Albert Smits handles the Maple Leafs and first overall pick Gavin McKenna. It’s another chapter in the 2026 top picks storyline, and with McKenna already getting the better of Ivar Stenberg, Smits is next in line. Both players have been excellent in their first NHL seasons, and this could be the start of something that lasts a long time.

For the Maple Leafs, though, the headline is simpler than all that: McCabe is back, and after the scare on Tuesday, Toronto badly needed that to be the case.

Leafs Got The Kind Of Win That Could Mean Something Bigger

After a 5-4 win over the Rangers, there was plenty for the Leafs to like beyond the two points. Head coach Jim Hiller pointed to the kind of steady, connected effort that has been harder to find in stretches this season, and he made a point of calling out the fourth line for giving the group a lift when the game was hanging in the balance.

Nick Paul drew Hillers praise for the way he kept the play alive late, a small detail that can end up mattering just as much as the flashier moments. The bigger concern, though, is the health of the blue line, with Hiller offering updates on Nick Blankenburg after he left in the third period and on Marshall Rifai, who is already being viewed as week-to-week. Maple Leafs Just Got Another Intriguing Option For More Size Up Front

The Maple Leafs have another name to watch if they keep looking for more size and pushback in their forward group. Columbus is reportedly open to offers for power forward Dmitri Voronkov, a 26-year-old winger who has drawn interest from Toronto as the club looks to add physicality and some offensive help to the lineup.

Voronkov has been a useful scorer over the past three seasons, averaging 19 goals and 19 assists, and his profile fits the kind of depth piece contenders often chase when they want a heavier look up front. He has also been in and out of the Blue Jackets' lineup this season, which only adds to the sense that a move could make sense for both sides, especially with his contract situation set to become part of the equation this summer. Maple Leafs Face A Trade Price Fans May Hate Most

The Maple Leafs are still shopping for help on the blue line, and the names being kicked around tell the story of what they are after. Toronto has reportedly shown interest in a young, high-end defenseman like Simon Edvinsson or Alexander Nikishin, the kind of player who could change the long-term look of the back end rather than just patch a short-term hole.

Easton Cowan is the wrinkle that makes the pursuit so complicated for the Leafs. The prospect just put together a career-best game with a goal and two assists in a 6-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Toronto appears reluctant to make him part of the price if that is what it takes to land one of those defensemen. For a team trying to improve now without emptying too much of its future, that is the part of the negotiation that may prove toughest to swallow. [Read more 🡒]
