The Toronto Maple Leafs faced another tough night, marking their ninth consecutive loss to the Montreal Canadiens with a 3-1 defeat. However, amidst the disappointment, there was a glimmer of hope that caught the attention of fans and head coach Craig Berube.
Benoit-Olivier Groulx Shines in Maple Leafs Debut
Benoit-Olivier Groulx made his much-anticipated debut for the Maple Leafs in Montreal, playing in front of a supportive crowd of family and friends. Although he didn't notch any points, his performance didn't go unnoticed.
Coach Berube praised him, saying, "I thought he played a very good game." Berube also commended Quillan and Cowboy, highlighting their strong play in a challenging and intense environment.
A Standout with the Toronto Marlies
Groulx's debut has been eagerly awaited, given his impressive track record with the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs' AHL affiliate. As a former second-round pick, he's tallied an impressive 50 points in 54 games, including 27 goals. The recent trades opened up a spot for Groulx as the third-line center, finally giving him his NHL opportunity.
Coach Berube acknowledged Groulx's development with the Marlies, noting, "In the minors, Groulx has put up some really good numbers. I was pretty impressed with a couple of plays he made tonight.
He challenged defensemen and beat them. He had a couple of good scoring chances."
Having had a stint in the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks, where he scored one goal and added four assists in 66 games, the 26-year-old French native is eager to reignite his career. If Groulx continues on this trajectory, he could secure a spot in the Maple Leafs' lineup as they look to fill key positions for the next season.
