The Toronto Maple Leafs have already spent the offseason reshaping their roster, but there may still be one more move worth making if they want to change the look of this season in a meaningful way.
After adding Kirill Marchenko, Sergei Bobrovsky, Darren Raddysh, Nick Paul, Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger, Nick Blankenburg, Miles Wood, and Zack MacEwen, the Leafs still appear to have a clear area that could use help: the left side of the blue line. That is why Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson stands out as a name Toronto should be watching closely.
Edvinsson has become one of the more intriguing trade candidates around the league. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently reported that the 23-year-old would rather be traded than re-sign in Detroit, which naturally puts a team like Toronto on alert. If the Leafs are serious about upgrading their defense, he is the kind of player they should at least explore.
The appeal is obvious. Edvinsson has already shown he can do a lot of damage in all three zones.
The 2021 sixth-overall pick put up nine goals, 25 points, 94 hits, 148 blocks, and a plus-12 rating in 72 games last season for Detroit. He also recorded seven goals, 31 points, 86 hits, 144 blocks, and a plus-12 rating in 78 games for the Red Wings during the 2024-25 season.
Those are the numbers of a defenseman who brings size, production, and real value at both ends of the ice.
There is also a fit issue that works in Toronto’s favor. The Maple Leafs are trying to balance the present with the future, and Edvinsson checks both boxes. He is a restricted free agent, so any team that lands him would need to get a new deal done, but that only adds to the appeal if Toronto believes his upside is still climbing.
If the Leafs did pull off a trade, Edvinsson would instantly change the feel of their top four. A pairing with a defensive defenseman like Chris Tanev would make sense, and he could also slide in alongside Darren Raddysh because of Raddysh’s steady all-around game.
The price would not be small. A player like Edvinsson would require a major trade package. But for a team that still looks like it could use one more jolt on the back end, he is the kind of swing that could be worth making.

Leafs Prospect Showed A Fierce Side Fans Will Notice
Tinus Luc Koblar has already given Leafs fans a glimpse of why Toronto liked him enough to keep close tabs on his development. The prospect, currently on loan to Rgle BK in the SHL, has started his season with three assists in three games, and he has also shown there is a edge to his game that can surface when the moment calls for it.
That side was on display after Rgles 4-3 win, when Koblar got into a confrontation with HV71 forward Nikola Pasic in the aftermath of the game. Koblar spoke about the situation in a post-game interview, and the episode only adds another layer to a young player the Leafs will be watching not just for skill, but for how he handles himself when a game turns personal. Maple Leafs Keep Getting Burned By One Early Problem
Early in the season, the Maple Leafs have run into a problem that can unravel a game before their offense ever gets rolling. Against the Vegas Golden Knights, those issues showed up again in a shootout loss, with Toronto still searching for smoother, cleaner play as it tries to settle into the year. Much of the discussion around the club has centered on consistency and chemistry, and that makes sense with so many new faces still getting used to one another.
Coaches have been working through adjustments, but the bigger challenge is getting the group to trust each read and execute it the same way every shift. For a team built to contend, the margin for error is thin, and early breakdowns in the flow of play can leave too much to recover later. Until the Leafs find a steadier way to move the puck and connect as a unit, they risk turning close games into avoidable tests. [Read more 🡒]
Nylanders Honest Take On A New Leafs Arrival Will Get Attention
William Nylander has been one of the early bright spots for Toronto this season, piling up six points in five games, and he recently gave The Athletic a look at the people and influences that have shaped him along the way. The conversation touched on his connection to former Maple Leaf Mats Sundin, along with the broader hockey background that helped form his game and perspective.
Nylander also had an especially interesting reaction to one of Torontos newest arrivals, saying the addition that has him most intrigued is Sergei Bobrovsky. There is a clear reason the veteran goalie stands out to him, and Nylanders comments suggested plenty of respect for what Bobrovsky has done at the highest level, while also leaving room for the bigger picture of how Torontos new faces might fit into the mix.
