Maple Leafs Face One Trade Deadline Question They Can't Miss

The pressure mounts on Maple Leafs' GM John Chayka as he intensifies trade talks to bolster the team's defense and secure their playoff hopes amidst a shaky season start.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still hunting for help on the blue line, and if the latest chatter is any indication, one move may not be enough.

General manager John Chayka has already done plenty of work over the summer, but with Toronto sitting at 8-7-2, the cracks are showing. The Leafs are outside the wild card picture right now, and the path back gets steeper the longer they wait. That’s why the trade market is starting to heat up around them.

According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, speaking on Leafs Morning Take earlier this week, Toronto could be lining up more than one deal before the March 1 trade deadline.

“They’re still looking. They’re still doing their thing, due diligence, whatever term you want to use, in trying to improve the blue line. And I could see multiple moves happening by the end of the trade deadline but they’re still looking around,” Pagnotta said.

He also pointed to the kind of defender Toronto has in mind.

“Simon Edvinsson is exactly what they need but that’s a hell of a return you’re going to have to give up for the kid. Barring that, and I got to feel a lot of fans would be torn on a potential Edvinsson trade if it were to happen.

Other than that -- at least that’s the calibre of defenceman that they’re looking for. They’re looking for big bodies that can shut down their own zone and get that puck up the ice.”

That fits the need. It also explains why the Leafs may be looking at more than one addition rather than one splashy fix.

A player like Edvinsson would check a lot of boxes, but the price could be steep, with Easton Cowan and a high-end draft pick mentioned as the kind of return it might take. That’s the sort of cost Toronto may not want to pay, even if the fit is obvious.

So the alternative is the slower, cheaper route: younger defensemen who may not have fully broken through yet, but could still become part of the answer on the back end.

The timing is the other question. If Toronto knows the blue line needs help now, why hold off until the deadline?

The answer may be simple: the market isn’t ready yet. Teams still believe they’re in the race, and that can make deals harder to pull off.

But waiting carries its own risk. The Leafs have already dropped games to the Utah Mammoth and Seattle Kraken after late mistakes, and those points can pile up fast.

If the blue line keeps bleeding chances, Toronto may not have the luxury of waiting for the perfect deal.

For now, the sense is clear: the Leafs are active, they’re looking, and multiple moves could be on the table before March 1.

Maple Leafs Let A Vital Home Point Slip Over One Costly Mistake

Jack Roslovic did enough to give the Maple Leafs a chance at home, scoring both Toronto goals in a 3-2 loss to the Utah Mammoth at Scotiabank Arena. The Leafs had to grind for their offense, and Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 33 of 36 shots, but the game still tilted on a late sequence that left Toronto staring at a missed opportunity for a valuable point.

With the score tied, a costly penalty put the Leafs on the penalty kill at the worst possible time, and Utah made them pay on the ensuing power play. It was the kind of finish that stings because Toronto had already done the hard part of getting back level, only to watch one mistake undo the work and send the home crowd away with a frustrating result. Maple Leafs Trade Piece Emil Andrae Suddenly Faces Another Uncertain Turn

Emil Andraes season has already taken one sharp turn, and it may be headed for another. After being dealt by the Maple Leafs to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 28 in a trade that sent several players between the two clubs, the young defenseman has now found himself on waivers as Columbus continues sorting out its roster picture.

Andrae has appeared in five games for the Blue Jackets this season, but his immediate future is now up in the air again. If he clears waivers, the next stop is expected to be the AHLs Cleveland Monsters, leaving the Leafs former trade piece once more waiting to see where he fits in a transaction that has already moved plenty of pieces around. Maple Leafs Suddenly Face An Emil Andrae Decision Again

Emil Andrae is back on the waiver wire, and with it comes another familiar question for the Maple Leafs: whether they want to get back into the mix on a player they already moved once this year. Columbus put the defenseman on waivers after a brief run of five games this season, reopening a situation that had seemed settled only after a busy stretch of transactions.

Andraes path has already been unusually winding, with two trades this year and Toronto among the teams involved in sending him to Columbus in a multi-player deal. Now the Leafs have a chance to consider whether a reunion makes sense, even if nothing has been confirmed yet, and the timing alone makes this one worth watching for a club that knows him well enough to at least revisit the conversation.
