Maple Leafs Coach Berube Overlooks Key Fix After Two Straight Losses

Despite Easton Cowan's impressive stats and potential to elevate the team, Maple Leafs HC Craig Berube remains committed to a veteran lineup, risking further losses.

As the NHL season picks up momentum post-Olympic break, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a bit of a slump, dropping two games in quick succession. Head coach Craig Berube might have an ace up his sleeve he's yet to play-Easton Cowan.

The Leafs faced a tough 2-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, followed by a 1-5 defeat against the Florida Panthers. In both games, Berube opted for a fourth line of Calle Jarnkrok, Steven Lorentz, and Scott Laughton, sidelining the promising Easton Cowan. Even when Jarnkrok was out against the Panthers, Cowan remained on the bench.

Easton Cowan: A Rising Star Deserving More Ice Time

At just 20, Cowan is making a solid case for more minutes on the ice. With 17 points-seven goals and ten assists-his contributions are noteworthy, especially for someone so early in their career.

What's more, Cowan's presence on the ice doesn't compromise the team's defense. In fact, his shifts often tilt the scoreboard in Toronto's favor, a claim not all veterans can make.

Cowan's offensive stats are impressive, with around 65 shots on goal and a shooting percentage of 10.8%. While these numbers may not jump off the page, they highlight his consistent ability to generate scoring opportunities and convert them at a commendable rate given his limited ice time.

Berube's decision to bench a talented first-round pick like Cowan in favor of players who don't significantly outshine him raises questions. It seems at odds with the team's supposed focus on nurturing young talent. Cowan's potential could be a game-changer for the Leafs, and it's time he gets the chance to prove it on the ice.
