Bo Groulx made a memorable debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens, even if the scoresheet didn’t reflect his impact. Returning to the NHL for the first time since April 2024 with the Ducks, Groulx started on the third line alongside Easton Cowan and Nick Robertson. While his presence wasn't immediately felt, he gradually found his stride, delivering a strong performance by the third period.
Post-game, Groulx shared his excitement about returning to the NHL in Montreal, with his family watching from the stands. He described his performance as a "work in progress," noting his improvement as the game unfolded.
"First period, I felt kind of behind on the play a little bit, speed-wise and everything," Groulx admitted. "Second period was a bit better, and third period I had my legs under me."
One standout moment came when Groulx executed a slick deke past Noah Dobson, cutting to the slot for a shot that was ultimately saved. This play seemed to boost his confidence, leading head coach Craig Berube to rely on him more, even in crucial late-game situations like a defensive zone faceoff.
Groulx confessed to some pre-game nerves, especially given the electrifying atmosphere at the Bell Centre, which he called the loudest in the NHL. "I think Chief really trusted me out there in key situations," he said, highlighting his defensive mindset and third-line role. Groulx’s performance with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, where he leads the team with 50 points in 54 games, clearly translated to the big stage.
Berube praised Groulx's debut, noting the strong performances of the young players. "I thought he played a very good game," Berube said. "Coming into this rink, it can be a pretty hostile environment, but I thought all three of them were very good."
Despite the Leafs' current struggles, Groulx sensed a positive attitude among his teammates, suggesting the slump might soon end. Reflecting on his game, he said, "In the second period, I had a very, very long shift in the D zone. I had a couple of good checks, so I think every time I’m engaged physically, that gets my legs under me."
With his promising debut, Groulx could be a key player in helping the Leafs return to their winning ways. His ability to generate energy and confidence through physical play and puck control was evident, leaving fans hopeful for what's to come.
