Kirill Marchenkos Columbus Return Could Get Awkward Fast

Anticipation builds as Kirill Marchenko prepares for a potentially charged return to Columbus, facing mixed emotions and uncertain fan reactions.

Kirill Marchenko is heading back to Columbus for the first time since the trade that sent him to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he’s not pretending to know how it’s going to go.

The Leafs are in the middle of a back-to-back after beating the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Monday, and Tuesday’s game at Nationwide Arena will drop Marchenko back into the building where he spent four seasons with the Blue Jackets. It’s the first time he’ll face his old club in Ohio since the move, and the emotions around it are a little murky from his side.

“It’s always good to be back on the Columbus, and but I’m first time on this position right now, and I don’t know what’s my feeling be,” Marchenko said after Monday’s win. “I try to focus on my game, and it’s just another game tomorrow. It’s still be special night, but I have like a lot of positive, and I want to just come and play the game.”

The breakup wasn’t exactly clean. There was already an understanding that the 26-year-old didn’t want to remain in Columbus after his contract expired, and then, a day before the regular season, Leafs general manager John Chayka landed him in a blockbuster trade and signed him to an eight-year deal worth $12.5 million per season.

That history makes it fair to wonder how the crowd will greet him. Marchenko isn’t trying to guess.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I really appreciate fans in Columbus when I play there.

It will be awesome, good time, and I don’t want to say anything else because I don’t know what they will do. It’s not on me.

It’s not my control right now. I just focus on my game and try to be ready for a game tomorrow.”

Marchenko’s Columbus resume is substantial. He played 292 games for the Blue Jackets across four seasons, scored 102 goals and totaled 208 points. Last season, he finished with 27 goals and 67 points in 76 games.

He also spoke about his relationship with Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness and his time with the organization.

“He’s a good coach,” Marchenko said. “We have a good time together.

And actually, now I’m Toronto. Yeah, I just more focus on my game, and what’s going to do tomorrow for it.

To have two points for the team, and I appreciate it for everybody in Columbus, for coaches, organization, team, players, fans. It was a good time, good time there.

But now it’s new step. And I just just playing my team right now for Toronto Maple Leafs. try to do my best.”

Auston Matthews Is Giving Maple Leafs Fans A New Captaincy Debate

Auston Matthews has looked at his captaincy differently this season, and it has given Maple Leafs fans something else to debate beyond the usual questions about his production and the teams ceiling. There is a sense that his leadership has become more deliberate, both in how he carries himself with the media and in the way he handles his role on the ice, which has made the early read on this season feel a little different than in years past.

One thread worth watching is whether that change is happening in a vacuum or with some help from around the organization. Mats Sundins presence has been floated as a possible influence on Matthews approach, though nothing about that is confirmed, and the broader point is simpler: Matthews may just be settling into the job on his own terms. For a captain under constant scrutiny in Toronto, even a subtle shift in demeanor can turn into a meaningful storyline fast. [Read more 🡒]

Maple Leafs Suddenly Have A Jake McCabe Concern They Cant Ignore

Jake McCabes night ended early against the Columbus Blue Jackets after a stick incident forced the Maple Leafs defenseman out of the game in the first period. Toronto confirmed he did not return, leaving the team to wait for more information on what exactly happened and how serious the injury might be.

The concern for the Leafs is obvious because McCabe is such a steady part of their blue line, and any facial injury brings an immediate layer of uncertainty. Head coach Jim Hiller is expected to provide an update, but for now Toronto is left hoping the situation is not as damaging as it looked in the moment. [Read more 🡒]

Leafs Blue Line Trouble Just Made This Erik Karlsson Rumor Real

Torontos injury pileup on the blue line has pushed the Maple Leafs into a familiar place this time of year, searching for help and trying to figure out whether a move can steady the back end before the situation gets worse. That search has now sharpened around Erik Karlsson, with reports linking Toronto to the Penguins defenseman as the club weighs how a high-end puck mover would fit into a lineup that has been stretched thin.

Karlsson is still producing offense in Pittsburgh, which is part of why the rumor has real legs, and the fit is easy enough to imagine for a Leafs team looking for immediate impact. The harder part is the price, and nothing has been settled yet, but this is the kind of conversation that tends to get louder once injuries force a contender to explore every possible option.
