Toronto sports fans have a lot to cheer about these days, and it’s not just because of the Maple Leafs. While the Leafs are winding down a tough season with nine games left and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16, the excitement is building for the Blue Jays as they gear up for their 2026 season opener against the Athletics on Friday night.
The Jays are riding high after a thrilling 2025 season that saw them become one of MLB’s hottest teams, culminating in their first World Series appearance since 1993. Although their journey ended in heartbreak with a Game 7 loss, it sparked a renewed sense of hope and anticipation among fans for what 2026 might bring.
In a show of city-wide support, Blue Jays players George Springer and Ernie Clement-both of whom have hockey backgrounds-were spotted at the Maple Leafs’ recent 4-3 win over the New York Rangers. Joining them were newly signed ace Dylan Cease and Japanese slugger Kazuma Okamoto. After the game, Leafs captain John Tavares emphasized the importance of mutual support between Toronto’s sports teams.
“Regardless of our situation, it’s fantastic,” Tavares remarked. “Their achievements last year brought so much to this city, and we’re all excited about what they’re aiming for this season. We love supporting them.”
The Blue Jays’ playoff fever was contagious last fall, capturing the city’s attention even as the Leafs began their season. Tavares expressed his eagerness to see if the Jays can complete their mission this year.
“Witnessing their playoff run was incredible,” Tavares shared. “Their drive to come back stronger and finish the job is inspiring. It’s great to share that excitement and mutual admiration.”
Ernie Clement, who brings a hockey player’s mentality to the diamond, discussed his approach with Sportsnet’s Shawn McKenzie during the Leafs’ pregame show.
“Whatever it takes to win, putting my body on the line-that’s what I learned on the ice,” Clement explained. “I have immense respect for those guys; hockey is an amazing sport.”
As the Maple Leafs head to St. Louis for a showdown with the Blues on Saturday, the Blue Jays will welcome the Athletics for a three-game series, kicking off what promises to be an exciting MLB season.
