Gavin McKenna wasted no time giving Toronto Maple Leafs fans something to remember from rookie camp.
On Friday at the Ford Performance Centre, the Leafs prospects hit the ice for their first practice together before the Prospect Showcase continued in Gatineau, Quebec, with two games against the Senators and the Jets prospects this weekend. For plenty of players, it was a chance to show progress before heading back to junior or European pro leagues with some added confidence in Blue and White.
McKenna was the one who stole the moment.
On his first real chance, he buried a Michigan goal - the lacrosse-style finish that instantly turns a practice clip into must-see material. It wasn’t the cleanest version of the move anyone has ever seen, and he didn’t exactly celebrate it like a man trying to send a message to the entire ice sheet. But the space was there, the goalie may have been a little late to react, and McKenna still made it look like just another play.
That’s the part Leafs fans will love. Even without the extra flash, the goal served as a reminder that McKenna is very much a Toronto Maple Leaf and can pull off that kind of skill with ease.
The bigger question is whether he can do it in an NHL game.
Practice is one thing. Doing it against the best defenses and goalies in the world, in actual game action, is something else entirely. If McKenna were to score a Michigan in his first month or two as a pro, it would be the kind of moment that rockets him into superstardom fast, in the same conversation as the Trevor Zegras and Sonny Milano highlight that lived on every show for months.
