Easton Cowan Is Giving The Leafs A New Reason For Optimism

As Easton Cowan blossoms under Coach Jim Hiller's watchful eye, the Maple Leafs look to harness his potential and navigate the emotional challenges of facing former teammates.

Ahead of Tuesday’s game in Columbus, Jim Hiller said the night carries some extra emotion for both sides of the Kirill Marchenko and Matthew Knies trade, while also outlining what he’s seeing from Easton Cowan and the lineup move that will bring Marshall Rifai in.

“There’ll be some. You can’t get around it. We’ve just got to try to manage it the best way,” Hiller said when asked about the first meeting since the deal.

He pointed to Knies’ ties to the Maple Leafs room and Marchenko’s time in Columbus as part of what makes the matchup a little different. “Kniesy was a great Leaf.

He has lots of good friends in there, lots of respect for him. There’ll be some of that.

Of course, Kirill had a great time while he was here, and we’re happy he’s ours. I’m sure Columbus is happy they’ve got Knies.”

Hiller also praised Marchenko’s recent work, especially the big night against Buffalo. But he made clear the finishing touch hasn’t quite shown up over the last couple of games.

“He had the big game against Buffalo, right? That was terrific.

The last two games, he’s had some really good chances that haven’t fallen for him. [The goalie’s name is unclear in the transcript] made two big saves off him.

He’s a goal scorer. When they start going in consistently, then he’ll probably find his way a little better.”

Asked whether Marchenko would be dealing with any special pressure in his return to Columbus, Hiller kept it simple.

“Not much, no. He’s a Maple Leaf now, and we’ve got him.

However it goes, he’s with us, and we have his back. He’s just got to go out and play the best he can.”

Hiller was also asked about the possibility of using Gavin with Auston, and said it remains in the mix even if it is not happening Tuesday.

“I have tried him with Auston from time to time. That’s always there. It’s always an option for us.

I’m sure there’ll be a day in his future that he starts with Auston someday, which is probably what you’re looking for. It just won’t be tonight.”

On the subject of Marchenko’s role, Hiller said taking him away from Auston can ease some of the pressure that naturally comes with skating beside a star center.

“When you play with a guy like Auston, although Auston doesn’t demand it, there’s a little pressure to get him the puck. That’s just human nature. I think we’d all feel that way a little bit.

Sometimes, you get relieved of that pressure, and you can go again. There’ll be times when Kirill goes back with Auston.

I’m sure of that. But for now, we like what it looks like.”

Hiller said Easton Cowan’s growth has stood out from what he saw on tape last season, and said the young player has taken a major step.

“I did watch tape. A lot of people have said he’s just physically matured, I think is one, and probably emotionally, too.

These are just young guys. To play in the NHL last year like he did and contribute is pretty amazing.

It’s hard to do. Sometimes, we take that for granted, just how difficult that is at a young age.

We expect people to mature as they go. From what I’ve understood, he’s taken a massive step that way.

He wants to be a hockey player. Like I said, I’ve had a lot of conversations with him, and he’s stuck to what he said. He’s earned a lot of trust from the coaches.”

When pressed on what those talks with Cowan have been about, Hiller didn’t go into specifics but said the winger has a clear idea of where he wants his career to go.

“I’ll keep them between us, but he has a vision for himself and where he thinks he can take his career and what he wants that to look like. We’re in alignment with what he’s capable of. He has a high ceiling.”

As for the lineup, Rifai will get the call in place of Blanky.

“Rif will jump in for Blanky. We’ve been meaning to get him in.

It’s been a while. We called him up, and we want to get him in there and see what he can do.”

Hiller said the club is hoping for a little more ice time from Rifai after his first outing, though he kept the expectation modest.

“He was fine that game. He might play a few more minutes.

We had seven that night, six tonight. Let’s just see.

Again, another young guy who paid his dues in the minors, won a championship. We have to give these guys some opportunity.”

Auston Matthews Is Giving Maple Leafs Fans A New Captaincy Debate

Auston Matthews has looked at his captaincy differently this season, and it has given Maple Leafs fans something else to debate beyond the usual questions about his production and the teams ceiling. There is a sense that his leadership has become more deliberate, both in how he carries himself with the media and in the way he handles his role on the ice, which has made the early read on this season feel a little different than in years past.

One thread worth watching is whether that change is happening in a vacuum or with some help from around the organization. Mats Sundins presence has been floated as a possible influence on Matthews approach, though nothing about that is confirmed, and the broader point is simpler: Matthews may just be settling into the job on his own terms. For a captain under constant scrutiny in Toronto, even a subtle shift in demeanor can turn into a meaningful storyline fast. [Read more 🡒]

Maple Leafs Suddenly Have A Jake McCabe Concern They Cant Ignore

Jake McCabes night ended early against the Columbus Blue Jackets after a stick incident forced the Maple Leafs defenseman out of the game in the first period. Toronto confirmed he did not return, leaving the team to wait for more information on what exactly happened and how serious the injury might be.

The concern for the Leafs is obvious because McCabe is such a steady part of their blue line, and any facial injury brings an immediate layer of uncertainty. Head coach Jim Hiller is expected to provide an update, but for now Toronto is left hoping the situation is not as damaging as it looked in the moment. [Read more 🡒]

Leafs Blue Line Trouble Just Made This Erik Karlsson Rumor Real

Torontos injury pileup on the blue line has pushed the Maple Leafs into a familiar place this time of year, searching for help and trying to figure out whether a move can steady the back end before the situation gets worse. That search has now sharpened around Erik Karlsson, with reports linking Toronto to the Penguins defenseman as the club weighs how a high-end puck mover would fit into a lineup that has been stretched thin.

Karlsson is still producing offense in Pittsburgh, which is part of why the rumor has real legs, and the fit is easy enough to imagine for a Leafs team looking for immediate impact. The harder part is the price, and nothing has been settled yet, but this is the kind of conversation that tends to get louder once injuries force a contender to explore every possible option.
