In an unexpected twist during Tuesday night's clash between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, forward Cole Caufield found himself sidelined for the start of the third period. Known for his goal-scoring prowess, Caufield missed the latter part of the second period and didn't hit the ice with his usual line. Instead, Ivan Demidov filled in alongside Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky.
After the game, head coach Martin St. Louis provided some clarity, explaining that Caufield wasn't feeling well. Despite this setback, he's expected to join the team as they head to Ottawa for the second half of their back-to-back against the Senators.
Caufield, showing resilience, remained on the bench for much of the third period. He took his first shift with just over eight minutes left during a Canadiens power play. He managed another shift on a subsequent power play before exiting to the locker room with under two minutes remaining, as the Canadiens worked to protect their 2-1 lead against an empty net.
At 25, Caufield is having a stellar season, boasting 37 goals and 64 points in 62 games. He's just one goal shy of setting a new personal best after matching last season's tally of 37.
Hailing from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Caufield's career stats are impressive, with 155 goals and 283 points over 349 games. His absence, even for a brief period, was certainly felt on the ice, but his quick return is a positive sign for the Habs.
