The Canadiens are hearing from other teams about Arber Xhekaj, but that doesn’t mean Montreal is eager to move him.
According to insider David Pagnotta, who said as much on “Leafs Morning Take”, clubs have been calling about the restricted free agent defenseman. That fits the profile.
At 6-foot-4, Xhekaj brings size, physicality and a clear willingness to stand up for teammates, the kind of traits that naturally attract attention around the league. He’s still developing, but he already gives Montreal a rare mix of toughness and upside on the blue line.
Even with the outside interest, there’s no sign the Canadiens are shopping him. Jeff Gorton addressed the situation directly and said, “We’ve already had conversations with Arber himself when he left Montreal for the summer.
I feel pretty confident that all our guys will continue good conversations. Right now it’s the draft, kind of concentrate on that, and then we’ll turn the page in a few days.”
One detail that stands out: Xhekaj did not file for salary arbitration. That’s often taken as a hint that a deal could be close, and Sportsnet’s Eric Engels also suggested there’s no real reason for fans to worry about the situation turning into something bigger.
So yes, teams are checking in. That part is real.
But the current read is that Montreal’s priority is a new contract, not a trade. Still, Kent Hughes has shown he’ll make a move if the return is right, and if an offer comes along that’s too strong to ignore, Xhekaj could be dealt.

Former Leafs Prospect Nick Robertson Just Got The Payday Toronto Debated
Nick Robertsons next chapter got a little clearer just as his old one was closing. The 24-year-old forward, recently traded out of Toronto, reached a new contract agreement shortly before his scheduled salary arbitration hearing, giving him some stability at a moment when his career had been in motion for weeks.
For the Leafs, Robertsons departure was tied to a season that made him arbitration-eligible and put his value back in the spotlight. He had spent his entire NHL career in Toronto, and after 234 games in blue and white, the debate over what he was worth finally ended with a deal elsewhere, leaving one more reminder of how quickly a young player can go from prospect to a payday another team was willing to make. Maple Leafs Suddenly Have 3 Familiar Free Agent Decisions To Make
The Maple Leafs are once again staring at a familiar kind of summer question: whether a few old faces might still make sense as roster fixes. With free agency offering limited certainty, the idea of bringing back former contributors has some appeal, especially when the alternatives are either unproven depth or a longer wait for internal options to settle in.
Michael Bunting, John Klingberg and James Reimer all fit that broad discussion in different ways, from scoring help to blue-line upside to veteran goaltending insurance. None of those possibilities is locked in, but the Leafs do have real reasons to at least weigh each one carefully as they try to patch holes without overcommitting. [Read more 🡒]
Flyers Nearly Made A Franchise Changing Trade Fans Never Saw Coming
A reported 2021 trade conversation has resurfaced as one of those front-office what-ifs that can linger for years, especially when it involves a core Maple Leafs winger in William Nylander. According to a content creator citing a source tied to an Amazon Prime documentary, Toronto explored a deal with Philadelphia that would have taken Nylander out of the picture and brought in Travis Konecny, with the discussions happening among key team executives before the idea fizzled.
What makes the story stand out now is how differently both players careers have settled since then. Nylander remained a central piece in Toronto and later locked in on a long-term extension in 2024, while Konecny did the same in Philadelphia, turning a once-rumored swap into a reminder of how close the Leafs came to a move that could have altered the rosters direction in a major way.
