Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews didn’t hold back on Tuesday when the conversation turned to Gavin McKenna.
In an interview with Ryan Leslie, Matthews praised Toronto’s first overall pick in a way that only added fuel to the buzz around the rookie heading into the NHL regular season. He also touched on John Chayka’s move and gave an update on the status of his injury, but it was his comments on McKenna that stood out.
Matthews called McKenna “special” in every sense that matters.
“He's a special player. He's a special person.
It's been awesome to get to spend some time with him, get to know him, and, you know, he's gonna be an incredible player in this league [...] It's just on us to support him, communicate with him, help him out in any way that we can.”
That kind of message says plenty about where Matthews is as a leader. He knows what it means to arrive young in Toronto, and he’s making it clear that McKenna won’t be left to figure it out alone.
The plan on the ice isn’t settled yet, though. Matthews and McKenna could wind up on the same line, but there’s no guarantee of that. New head coach Jim Hiller will make the final call.
Chris Johnston has said the expectation is for McKenna to begin lower in the lineup. Matthews is likely to open the season with Matthew Knies and Jack Roslovic, while McKenna could skate with John Tavares and William Nylander.
No matter how the combinations shake out, McKenna will be around plenty of help. The challenge now is for him to settle in, adjust quickly, and chip in offensively. For Leafs fans, that setup is hard not to like.
