The Toronto Blue Jays are gearing up to pay tribute to a cherished figure in their history, Buck Martinez. A familiar voice to fans, Martinez has been a staple in the broadcast booth since 2010, and his recent retirement marks the end of an era.
Martinez's connection with the Blue Jays runs deep. Not only did he play and manage for the team, but he also became a beloved broadcaster, making him the perfect inaugural inductee into the newly minted Hall of Excellence. This honor will replace the Level of Excellence, moving from the Rogers Centre's upper decks to a prominent display on the 100-level right-field concourse, set to open this August.
Mark Shapiro, in a heartfelt announcement video, emphasized Martinez's multifaceted contributions to the franchise. "Buck has played so many important roles for this franchise.
First as a player, then as a manager, and then for decades as our broadcaster," Shapiro remarked. "He has symbolized the professionalism and passion for the game of baseball, and for so many of our fans has served as a point of connection to so many special moments throughout Blue Jays history."
The Hall of Excellence will continue to grow over the next five seasons, honoring players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters who have left their mark on the team. Martinez joins a prestigious group that includes legends like Dave Stieb, Roy Halladay, and Jose Bautista.
Martinez’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. He took a leave in 2025 for lung cancer treatment but returned triumphantly to a standing ovation from fans. His retirement, though bittersweet, coincided with the Blue Jays' thrilling run to the World Series, their first in over thirty years.
Reflecting on his career, Martinez expressed gratitude: "It has been a fantastic journey with Sportsnet, the Blue Jays, and the wonderful Blue Jays fans all over the world. Thank you all for embracing me and welcoming my family and me in a way that has made us feel like we are part of yours."
Martinez's legacy is one of passion and dedication, and his induction into the Hall of Excellence is a celebration of a career that has touched countless fans and shaped the Blue Jays' story.
