In a surprising move, the Washington Nationals have parted ways with former top Toronto Blue Jays prospect, Orelvis Martínez. This decision comes after the infielder was initially reassigned to the minors earlier this month, following a minor league contract with the team.
Martínez's Spring Training performance was nothing short of impressive. He posted a solid .400/.455/.400 slash line in 11 plate appearances, boasting a 129 wRC+. Despite not hitting any home runs, his performance suggested potential, making it likely he'll catch the eye of another organization for a minor league deal.
The past couple of years have been a rollercoaster for Martínez. He first made waves in 2019, hammering seven home runs in 163 plate appearances with the Blue Jays' Dominican Summer League team. His power at the plate was unmatched until Juan Sanchez's breakout in 2025.
In 2021, Martínez continued to shine, spending most of the season with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays before wrapping up with the High-A Vancouver Canadians. He led the organization with 28 home runs in 451 plate appearances.
By 2022, Martínez was taking swings with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. His performance was mixed, hitting .203/.286/.446, but he still managed to lead the organization with 30 home runs-a testament to his power, especially given his young age.
Martínez bounced back in 2023, improving his slash line to .243/.340/.496 with 28 home runs in 538 plate appearances, while significantly reducing his strikeout rate from 28.5% to 23.4%.
The year 2024 was pivotal for Martínez. By mid-June, he was slashing .260/.343/.523 with 16 home runs in 269 plate appearances, earning a call-up to the majors. He even recorded his first big league hit, but his momentum was halted by an 8-game suspension for PED use.
Returning later that season, Martínez performed well with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. However, the Blue Jays' lackluster 74-88 finish in 2024 meant he missed out on further major league opportunities. His struggles continued into 2025, where he slashed just .176/.288/.348 with 13 home runs in 394 plate appearances, leading to his release from the Blue Jays.
As Martínez looks for a new home, his journey underscores the unpredictability of baseball careers, where talent and opportunity must align perfectly. Fans will be watching to see where this once-promising prospect lands next.
