Max Scherzer is gearing up for another season with the Toronto Blue Jays, marking his 19th year in the league. For Scherzer, the decision to return was a no-brainer, solidified during a pivotal moment in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Reflecting on that game, Scherzer shared, “I came home thinking, there's no way that was my last pitch. I felt great out there, throwing well in Game 7.
It just couldn't be the end for me.” The unpredictability of free agency loomed large, but Scherzer's determination was clear.
“Free agency is wild. You think it’ll go one way, and then it shifts unexpectedly.”
Scherzer's performance in the series was strong, pushing the Blue Jays to the brink of a championship, but the Dodgers ultimately edged them out. This season, the Blue Jays are laser-focused on making another run for the World Series, and having Scherzer back is a significant boost. His veteran presence will be crucial as the team navigates the ups and downs of the season.
Despite the uncertainties of free agency, Scherzer always had his sights set on returning to Toronto. “There were other teams in the mix,” he admitted on Foul Territory TV.
“But I wanted to be back with the Blue Jays. Free agency can take unexpected turns, and I knew I had to be open to the possibility of joining another team.
But deep down, Toronto was where I wanted to be.”
With Scherzer back in the fold, the Blue Jays are poised to tackle the season with renewed vigor and a clear goal: to capture that elusive championship.
Max Scherzer knew as soon as he got home from the gut-wrenching Game 7 loss that he would be returning for his 19th season.
