Kevin Gausman's Early Exit Just Put New Focus On Blue Jays Trade

Kevin Gausmans promising start with the Chicago Cubs hit a snag at Wrigley Field as a recurring hand cramp forced him to exit the game, leaving fans and the team in suspense over his health and playoff prospects.

Kevin Gausman’s first Wrigley Field start as a Cub turned into an uncomfortable night fast.

The former Toronto Blue Jays ace was on the mound Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox when trouble started in the fourth inning. Announcers believed he was dealing with a cramp in his left hand, and once he removed his glove, it was obvious he was having a hard time fully extending the thumb on his non-throwing hand.

Chicago’s manager and pitching coach both came out to check on him and handed him some energy gel in an attempt to help him finish the inning. The problem didn’t ease up. By the next frame, Gausman’s left hand was twitching again, and that was enough to send him out of the game for good.

Afterward, Gausman said he has dealt with the issue before, but not this early in a start.

"I've had it happen, but usually it's when I'm up over 100 pitches. I've never had it happen this early in an outing," he told reporters following Tuesday's game.

The 35-year-old was traded from Toronto to Chicago at the 2026 trade deadline, with the Blue Jays receiving prospects Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene in return.

Bateman, meanwhile, has wasted no time making his presence felt in Toronto. In 10 games with the Blue Jays, he’s hitting .283 and has already moved into the leadoff spot. Toronto has also won eight of the 10 games it has played with him in the lineup.

For now, the exact severity of Gausman’s hand problem hasn’t been reported. But if it lingers, it could become a real issue for the Cubs, who brought him in to help fortify the rotation for a possible playoff push.

Alejandro Kirk Is Giving The Blue Jays A Lift They Desperately Need

Alejandro Kirk has been one of the more important reasons the Blue Jays have kept their recent winning streak rolling, and the timing could hardly be better. After returning from a thumb injury, he has provided a noticeable lift with the bat while splitting time between catcher and designated hitter, giving Toronto a steadier presence in the middle of the lineup at a point when every productive at-bat matters.

For a team still trying to claw its way into the playoff picture, Kirks resurgence carries real weight beyond a hot stretch at the plate. The Blue Jays have needed dependable offense from players who can handle pressure and stay available, and Kirk has checked both boxes lately, adding another layer of optimism as the season tightens and the margin for error shrinks. Blue Jays Missed Ketel Marte Chance Suddenly Looks A Lot Better

The Blue Jays reported interest in Ketel Marte now carries a different kind of weight after the Diamondbacks put the infielder on the restricted list following his absence from a game against the Red Sox. Toronto was known to be in the mix when Martes name surfaced in trade conversation, but nothing ever got across the finish line, leaving the club to watch the situation from the outside.

Marte is expected to return to Phoenix for an MRI on his knee, and the uncertainty around when and where the injury happened only adds to the intrigue. For a Blue Jays team that had already wondered what it might have cost to land him, the latest twist makes the missed opportunity look a lot more complicated than it did even a few days ago.
