In a rain-shortened spring training game, the Blue Jays edged out the Marlins 5-4 over six innings. Despite the weather cutting things short, there was plenty to unpack from the action on the field.
Pitching Breakdown:
Lazaro Estrada took the mound first, delivering 2.1 innings while giving up three hits, including a home run, and two earned runs. His spring ERA now stands at 4.50.
Connor Seabold followed, pitching 1.2 innings with two hits and one earned run, notching a 6.75 ERA. He also showcased some defensive skills by picking off Otto Lopez at first base.
Joe Mantiply contributed an inning of work, allowing one hit and a home run, maintaining a 4.50 ERA. Jesse Hahn rounded out the pitching, pitching 0.2 innings with two hits, and holds a 6.35 ERA.
Offensive Highlights:
George Springer was on fire, going 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI, raising his spring average to .231. Nathan Lukes also impressed, matching Springer's 2-for-2 performance with a run scored, boosting his average to .296. Daulton Varsho continued his hot streak, going 1-for-1 with a double and a walk, maintaining an impressive .423 average.
On the flip side, Davis Schneider managed a walk despite going hitless, and Addison Barger struggled with two strikeouts in his 0-for-2 showing. Myles Straw contributed an RBI despite not recording a hit.
Noteworthy Performances:
From the bench, Jesus Sanchez drew a walk, while RJ Schreck, despite going 0-for-1, made a highlight-reel throw from right field to nab a runner at the plate. Leo Jimenez and Eloy Jimenez each added a hit to their tallies, with averages of .278 and .297, respectively.
While rain-shortened games can be frustrating, especially when eager to see young talent in action, the Blue Jays can take solace in the solid performances from some of their key players. With an off-day tomorrow, the team will regroup before hosting the Orioles on Wednesday.
