Gausman Makes History With Opening Day Strikeout Record

Kevin Gausman dazzles on Opening Day, setting a new Blue Jays strikeout record and solidifying his legacy in Toronto.

TORONTO -- The Ace Returns in Style

Kevin Gausman and the Blue Jays are back in action, and it feels like they never left. Just months after their heartbreaking Game 7 loss in the World Series, Gausman showed he's still at the top of his game.

In a thrilling 3-2 walk-off victory over the A's, Gausman set a new Blue Jays record for strikeouts on Opening Day with 11, surpassing legends like Roy Halladay and Esteban Loaiza. It was a masterclass performance, as he struck out seven of the first 10 batters, leaving the A's lineup bewildered by his devastating splitter.

Gausman joined an elite club, becoming just the seventh pitcher since 1900 to record at least 11 strikeouts with zero walks on Opening Day. Only a few, including MacKenzie Gore, J.R. Richard, and Bob Gibson, have managed more with 13.

During the Blue Jays' World Series run, Gausman seemed to unlock a new level of performance. Despite leading the league in innings pitched in 2025, he's shown no signs of slowing down at 35, in the final year of a stellar five-year contract with Toronto. His fastball hit 96 mph over six innings of one-hit ball, complemented by his splitter that left hitters guessing.

Gausman’s blend of reliability and high upside makes him the blueprint for what the Blue Jays want in their pitchers. While veterans like Chris Bassitt and José Berríos provide a solid foundation, Gausman offers both stability and excitement. Pitchers like Dylan Cease and Trey Yesavage are following in his footsteps.

“I really love our pitching staff this year,” Gausman shared. “It’s the best, stuff-wise, since I’ve been here, and we’ve had great pitching staffs. The swing-and-miss is probably more than we’ve ever had.”

Though his future in Toronto might be uncertain, Gausman still feels like a pitcher in his prime, fully in control of his talents. Reflecting on his time with the Blue Jays, he expressed gratitude for the decision to join the team.

“Me and my wife talk about it all the time. The greatest decision we ever made was coming here,” Gausman said.

“I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. My family has really come to love Toronto and Toronto has loved us back.

It’s been really special.”

Despite the offseason and Opening Day festivities, Gausman remains unfazed. He’s still the ace, and if this performance is any indication, he’s better than ever.
