The St. Louis Cardinals have been tied to an unexpected name as the trade deadline approaches, but the fit looks shaky at best.
On Thursday, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden put the Cardinals among the most likely landing spots for Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman if he’s moved. That came after The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that Gausman can decline a trade to eight teams: Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Athletics, Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Seattle Mariners.
Bowden then narrowed the field further, writing: "That leaves Cubs, Cardinals, Padres and Braves as most likely landing spots if traded."
On paper, Gausman would give St. Louis a real boost.
The veteran is a two-time All-Star with a 3.85 career ERA in 382 total big league appearances over 14 years. He’s not putting together his sharpest season, carrying a 4.51 ERA in 21 starts, but he would still be an upgrade for a Cardinals rotation that could use help.
If the club wanted to make room, Matthew Liberatore could move to the bullpen.
Still, the idea runs into a few obvious roadblocks. Gausman is a rental, set to become a free agent after the season, and Chaim Bloom has already cooled the notion of adding rentals. That alone makes the rumor hard to buy.
The Cardinals’ place in the standings makes it even tougher to picture. They’re in fourth place in the National League Central and sit 1 1/2 games out of a National League Wild Card spot. Even if they landed Gausman, there’s no guarantee it would be enough to push them into October, which makes the cost of giving up prospects a tough sell after spending the offseason building up the farm system.
For now, the more believable path is St. Louis dealing away a few pieces and adding prospects rather than making a push for a short-term starter. Bowden’s mention of the Cardinals is notable, but the fit still doesn’t look likely.
