As the countdown to Opening Day narrows, the Toronto Blue Jays are finalizing their roster for the 2026 season. Sunday brought some clarity as manager John Schneider announced that Tommy Nance secured a spot in the bullpen. Meanwhile, 2024 Rule 5 selection Angel Bastardo, along with Yariel Rodríguez and Jorge Alcala, who had a Spring Training invite, will not be on the roster.
Nance, who was out of minor league options, impressed during the 2025 season with a stellar 1.99 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and a 9.1 K/9 rate over 30 appearances. His ability to keep the ball in the park-allowing no home runs-and his impressive late-season performance, lowering his ERA to 0.82 by August, made him a reliable choice.
His curveball was particularly effective, boasting a 40.9% whiff rate and holding opponents to a .159 batting average. However, his sinker and slider were less effective, with opponents hitting over .300 against them.
Angel Bastardo, a notable storyline entering camp, faced challenges after missing significant time due to Tommy John surgery. In his seven spring appearances, he allowed four earned runs over 7 2/3 innings, with seven walks and five strikeouts.
As a Rule 5 pick, Bastardo will be placed on waivers, and if unclaimed, offered back to the Red Sox. There’s also potential for a trade or a deal to keep him in Toronto’s system.
With Nance’s position confirmed, one bullpen spot remains open. Contenders for this position include lefty Adam Macko, Chase Lee, and Spencer Miles, last season’s Rule 5 pick.
The Blue Jays might also look externally to fill this role. The decision is expected to be made by Schneider tomorrow morning.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Blue Jays finalize their roster and gear up for what promises to be an exciting season.
