Blue Jays Stun Fans by Cutting 28-Year-Old Ahead of Opening Day

In a tough roster decision, the Blue Jays part ways with Juan Yepez, casting uncertainty on the first baseman's future as the season nears.

The Toronto Blue Jays, fresh off a promising postseason run, returned with a roster brimming with talent, making it a challenging environment for Juan Yepez. The former outfielder and first baseman for the St.

Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals joined the Blue Jays on a minor-league contract with a non-roster invite. However, his spring training stint was brief, with just a single plate appearance in the Grapefruit League.

Just days before the Blue Jays' season opener, Yepez was released, as noted in the official transactions log. It's uncertain whether this move was Yepez's decision to explore other opportunities or if it was simply a reflection of Toronto's roster plans.

The past year was tough for Yepez. He didn't play in a major league game for the first time since 2022, and his Triple-A performance dipped significantly, with an OPS of .605 over 62 games. After parting ways with the Nationals, he signed with Toronto in early February.

Back in 2022, St. Louis fans had high hopes for Yepez as a potential middle-of-the-order powerhouse.

He impressed with 12 home runs and a .447 slugging percentage in 76 major league games, adding 16 more homers in 50 Triple-A appearances. However, as the league adjusted to his style, Yepez struggled to adapt.

Toronto's outfield depth was solid even before Yepez's signing, and with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. anchoring first base, his chances there were slim. Still, there's a possibility he might return to the Blue Jays' Triple-A team after testing free agency.
