Blue Jays Star Linked to Mastering New ABS Strike Zone System

Davis Schneider's mastery of the ABS strike zone challenge system positions him as a potential game-changer for the Blue Jays in the major leagues.

As the MLB season kicks off, many players will encounter the ABS strike zone challenge system for the first time in regular-season action. However, for Toronto Blue Jays' Davis Schneider, it's familiar territory. Having spent recent time in Triple-A, Schneider's already navigated this system with impressive results.

In Triple-A, Schneider showcased an exceptional knack for challenging strike calls, boasting the highest success rate in the league. Out of 12 challenges, he nailed 10, translating to an impressive 83% success rate.

His specialty? Reversing calls on pitches just off the outside edge, even turning five potential strikeouts into favorable outcomes.

Schneider's stint in Triple-A was cut short when he got called up to the Blue Jays, where he quickly became a key player, especially against left-handed pitchers. But his brief experience with the challenge system suggests he's well-equipped to take on the same role this season.

Schneider's plate discipline is a standout feature, even among major league hitters. His 20.9% chase rate placed him in the top 10% of those facing a similar number of out-of-zone pitches, and his 15.9% walk rate ranked him fifth among 348 hitters with at least 200 plate appearances. This keen eye and understanding of the strike zone are what make him a prime candidate for effectively using the challenge system.

While teams may analyze challenge data to decide which players should refrain from challenging calls, Schneider seems unlikely to face such restrictions. His sense of the strike zone is sharp, and it's a tool he’ll likely wield with precision throughout the season.
