The Toronto Blue Jays have locked in their starting rotation as they gear up for the new season, and it’s looking like a formidable lineup. Kevin Gausman is set to take the mound on Opening Day, marking his first time in this role for the Blue Jays. Last year, it was José Berríos who had the honor, but this time, the spotlight is on Gausman.
Following Gausman, the rotation will feature Dylan Cease, Eric Lauer, Cody Ponce, and the veteran Max Scherzer. This lineup was confirmed by manager John Schneider, setting the stage for an exciting start to the season.
The opening series against the Athletics will see Gausman, Cease, and Lauer in action, while Ponce and Scherzer are slated to make their season debuts against the Colorado Rockies. Interestingly, Scherzer is lined up to kick off the series against the Dodgers on April 6th, with Gausman and Cease following.
However, the rotation is not set in stone for the long haul, as the team is already dealing with some injury setbacks. Rookie standout Trey Yesavage is sidelined with a shoulder impingement, Shane Bieber is out with forearm fatigue, and Berríos is recovering from a stress fracture in his right elbow.
Despite these challenges, the Blue Jays’ depth in starting pitching remains a strong point. Even before the season kicks off, this depth is being put to the test. Former top prospect Ricky Tiedemann was also shut down due to injury during Spring Training, adding to the team’s hurdles.
In the minors, Adam Macko and Lázaro Estrada, both on the 40-man roster, could provide some much-needed length. If the team needs to dig deeper, they might consider adding new names to the roster or turning to options like Angel Bastardo or Spencer Miles.
The Blue Jays’ rotation still holds promise, particularly if Lauer can replicate his 2025 performance and Ponce successfully transitions to the majors. With any luck, reinforcements will arrive soon to bolster an already impressive lineup.
