Blue Jays Missed Ketel Marte Chance Suddenly Looks A Lot Better

Amidst the Arizona Diamondbacks' tumultuous situation with Ketel Marte, the Toronto Blue Jays' decision not to trade for the embattled infielder appears increasingly wise.

The Blue Jays’ offseason pursuit of Ketel Marte suddenly looks a lot less appealing.

Toronto spent plenty of time this past winter trying to strengthen its roster for the 2026 season, and Marte was one of the names tied to the club as a possible answer at infielder after the departure of Bo Bichette. On paper, it made sense. Marte has been the kind of bat a team can lean on, especially for a Blue Jays lineup that has had trouble finding offense this season.

But this week brought a reminder that talent isn’t the whole story.

Arizona placed Marte on the restricted list after he did not show up for Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Marte was dealing with a “personal issue”, though the team was still trying to sort out the situation, according to the Toronto Sun.

The Diamondbacks then tried to clear things up on Tuesday. Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reported that Marte was headed back to Phoenix for an MRI on his knee.

Even then, the details remained murky. It was not clear where or when Marte suffered the injury, and Lovullo said he and Marte had not spoken since Monday. Lovullo also said the decision to have the MRI done in Arizona rather than Boston was “the player’s choice”, according to Sportsnet.

There’s no question what Marte brings when he’s on the field. In 118 games with Arizona this year, he has hit .249 with a .760 OPS, 65 runs scored, 21 home runs and 67 RBIs. Those are the numbers of a hitter the Blue Jays would have welcomed in a heartbeat.

Still, the fit is about more than production. Marte was also placed on the restricted list last July after missing a series following the All-Star break, when he returned to the Dominican Republic after a home burglary. Personal items and jewelry were stolen, though no one was home when it happened.

Toronto has built a group that clearly feeds off chemistry. Even with some of the pieces that helped form that identity no longer around, the team has looked loose and connected during its late-season push. That kind of environment can matter.

And that’s why the Blue Jays may have come out ahead by missing on Marte. His bat would have helped.

The distractions might not have been worth it. Sometimes the cleanest deal is the one that never gets done.

Kevin Gausman's Early Exit Just Put New Focus On Blue Jays Trade

Kevin Gausmans outing at Wrigley Field ended earlier than anyone expected, and for Blue Jays fans the sight carried a little extra weight because it came so soon after the right-hander was moved from Toronto to the Cubs at the 2026 trade deadline. The trade already gave the Blue Jays a fresh point of evaluation on their side of the deal, but seeing Gausman forced out of a start in a new uniform quickly turned attention from the transaction itself to the kind of condition that can shape how a pitcher looks over the rest of a season.

Gausman later said the issue was a cramp in his left hand, the non-throwing one, and noted he has dealt with it before. What made this trip to the mound stand out was how early it arrived, cutting into the rhythm of a start before it could really settle into place. For Toronto, the immediate takeaway is less about one outing than about how a familiar arm now fits into the aftermath of a deadline move that is already being watched closely. [Read more 🡒]

Alejandro Kirk Is Giving The Blue Jays A Lift They Desperately Need

Alejandro Kirk has been one of the more important reasons the Blue Jays have kept their recent winning streak rolling, and the timing could hardly be better. After returning from a thumb injury, he has provided a noticeable lift with the bat while splitting time between catcher and designated hitter, giving Toronto a steadier presence in the middle of the lineup at a point when every productive at-bat matters.

For a team still trying to claw its way into the playoff picture, Kirks resurgence carries real weight beyond a hot stretch at the plate. The Blue Jays have needed dependable offense from players who can handle pressure and stay available, and Kirk has checked both boxes lately, adding another layer of optimism as the season tightens and the margin for error shrinks.
