The Toronto Blue Jays' starting pitchers are making history right out of the gate this season. Kevin Gausman and Dylan Cease have both pulled off a remarkable feat not seen since 1901, showcasing their dominance on the mound.
In their first starts of the 2026 season, both Gausman and Cease racked up 11 or more strikeouts. This achievement marks the first time in 125 years that two starters from the same team have managed such a performance in the opening games of a season.
Gausman, a seasoned veteran at 35, kicked things off with 11 strikeouts in a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Athletics on Opening Day. This marks his 14th season in the majors and his fifth with Toronto.
Gausman has been a pillar of consistency, playing a crucial role in the Blue Jays' playoff run last year. He wrapped up the 2025 season with a solid 3.59 ERA, a 1.062 WHIP, and 189 strikeouts.
On the other hand, Dylan Cease, at 30, is making a splash in his debut season with the Blue Jays after signing a hefty seven-year, $210 million deal. He struck out 12 batters in his first start for Toronto, aiming to rebound from a challenging 2025 with San Diego, where he posted a 4.55 ERA and a 1.327 WHIP, alongside 215 strikeouts.
With these performances, Toronto's starting rotation is setting a high bar early in the season, and fans have plenty to be excited about as the Blue Jays look to make a significant impact this year.
