In a move sure to delight fans, the Toronto Blue Jays have announced the creation of their Hall of Excellence, set to debut at the Rogers Centre this August. And who better to be the first inductee than Buck Martinez? Mark your calendars for the induction ceremony on August 29.
This new Hall, nestled in the 100 level of right field, will take the place of the team’s beloved Level of Excellence. Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro shared in a video, “As we transition to a Hall of Fame, Buck Martinez is the perfect choice as our inaugural inductee.
From player to manager to broadcaster, Buck has been the heart of this franchise. His passion and professionalism have connected fans to countless memorable moments in Blue Jays history.”
Martinez, a fixture in the Blue Jays broadcast booth, announced his retirement on February 6. Before his broadcasting career, he was a big league catcher for 17 seasons, spending the last six with Toronto.
He began his TV career in 1987 and went on to call over 4,000 Blue Jays games through 2025. He also took the helm as manager for 115 games during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
Shapiro emphasized the significance of the new Hall of Excellence as part of the club’s 50th season celebrations. “For decades, the Level of Excellence has been our way of honoring greatness. This year, we’re evolving it into the Hall of Excellence as we celebrate our rich history.”
The Hall promises to offer fans an “interactive and immersive” experience, connecting them with the pivotal moments and figures in Blue Jays baseball. Over the next five years, a series of players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters will be inducted, each leaving a lasting legacy on the franchise. Fans will also have a say in future inductees, as reported by Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.
