Kirk Herbstreit is making sure Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond gets his name in the conversation before the 2026 season even gets rolling.
ESPN’s lead college football analyst recently highlighted Hammond as one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country, putting the Red Raiders’ starter in a group of signal callers he believes deserve more attention. Herbstreit’s list came in a social media video where he pointed to the star power at the position this season, noting the buzz around Arch Manning at Texas, Julian Sayin at Ohio State, Dante Moore at Oregon, and CJ Carr at Notre Dame.
For Texas Tech, the timing matters. There was a stretch when the Red Raiders expected a different quarterback to be the face of the offense this fall, but Brendan Sorsby’s admission of gambling on college football when he was at Indiana and Cincinnati changed that plan and pushed Hammond into the starting job. That happened even though Hammond is less than a year removed from tearing a ligament in his knee.
Herbstreit didn’t sound like someone buying into the idea that Texas Tech had lost its punch. He was emphatic about Hammond.
"All the talk in the offseason about Sorsby at Texas Tech," he says, "Oh my gosh, is he going to play? Is he not going to play?
Obviously he's not. Oh well, I guess they're not going to be a threat.
"Are you kidding me? Will Hammond?
I think Will Hammond is an awesome player. We got a taste of him last year.
A guy that's 6'2", 210 pounds, coming off the ACL. About the ten-month mark right now.

"I think he's got a chance to be in a great spot with an uber-talented roster there in Lubbock. And don't forget that they still have a quarterback, and his name is Will Hammond.
And if he's healthy, and word is he's ahead of schedule, look out for him to have a big year. I think Texas Tech is going to be a playoff team this year, but Will Hammond has a chance to have a big year.

Hammond has already shown Texas Tech fans why there’s belief around him. Last season, he took over for the injured Behren Morton in the second half at Utah and helped flip the game on the road against the No. 16 team in the nation at the time. With Tech leading 10-3 when he entered, he finished 13 of 16 for 169 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in a 34-10 win.
The year before, in just his second college appearance, Hammond was again forced into a second-half road role, this time at TCU. He threw for 121 yards and a touchdown on 10-of-15 passing, added a 4-yard touchdown run, and helped Tech score 17 second-half points before the Red Raiders fell 35-34. He also lost a costly fumble as Tech tried to drive for the winning score in the final two minutes.
His two starts have both ended in losses. In the 2024 Liberty Bowl, a number of key Red Raiders, including RB Tahj Brooks, did not play in a 39-26 loss to Arkansas. Hammond went 20 of 34 for 280 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in that game.
His other start came last season at Arizona State, where Tech lost 26-22. Hammond completed 22 of 37 passes for 167 yards, but he also helped spark a late push. Down 19-7 in the fourth quarter, he led the Red Raiders back to a 22-19 lead in the final two minutes with a touchdown run and a touchdown pass.
That’s the version of Hammond Herbstreit is betting on: a quarterback with real tools, a solid frame at 6'2", 210 pounds, and enough flashes already to suggest a much bigger stage is coming. And with an uber-talented roster around him in Lubbock, Herbstreit thinks Texas Tech could be headed for a playoff run, with Hammond positioned to be one of the bigger breakout names in the sport.
