Vince Young knows exactly what it looks like when a Texas quarterback becomes a national obsession. He lived it as the nation’s No. 1 recruit in the 2002 class, and now he’s watching his son, Jordan “Jayman” Young, start his own path through the game from a very different angle.
This time, Young is in the passenger seat.
Jordan Young is a 2028 prospect who is heading into his junior season at Houston’s Kinkaid School. He has done most of his work at wide receiver and kick returner so far, but he is also chasing a bigger shot at quarterback - the same position that made his father appointment television more than two decades ago.
That comes with a heavy name attached. Vince Young remains the only dual-threat quarterback to earn a perfect composite recruiting rating, and his recruitment turned into a Houston spectacle long before social media made high school stars daily content. He eventually picked Texas over Florida State, LSU, Arkansas and Kansas State, then became the centerpiece of a loaded Mack Brown recruiting class that included Rodrique Wright, Justin Blalock, Brian Robison, Kasey Studdard, Lyle Sendlein, David Thomas, Selvin Young and Aaron Ross.
Three years later, he delivered one of the defining performances in college football history, leading Texas past USC for the 2005 national championship.
Jordan’s story is much quieter right now, but there are signs people are starting to notice. He has not received an official scholarship offer yet, though his athleticism has already created some buzz. A 100-yard kickoff return last season made the rounds on social media and instantly brought back memories of the open-field burst his father once showed at Texas.
Still, Jordan wants more than the label of return man or famous son. He wants a chance at quarterback.
Vince has been sharing clips of Jordan’s progress and taking him to camps throughout the summer, including events the younger Young specifically asked to attend. But instead of trying to work the back channels or lean on his name, Vince says he is approaching it like any other parent.
That means registering for camps, making sure Jordan shows up ready and helping him understand what coaches are actually evaluating. It is not just arm strength, speed or the recruiting name on the back of the jersey.
Character matters. Communication matters.
Professionalism matters.
Jordan may never have to deal with the kind of recruiting frenzy that followed Vince Young at Houston Madison. If that’s the case, it might end up helping him.
