Texas Tech Testing Wild Two Way Role For Freshman

Texas Tech is exploring a dual-role path for redshirt freshman Sean "Rambo" Robinson, testing his skills on both sides of the ball this spring.

Sean "Rambo" Robinson's journey to finding his ideal position on the field has been nothing short of intriguing. Initially committed to Arizona as an outside linebacker, Robinson surprised many by signing with Texas Tech, where the coaches envisioned him as a tight end. At 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, this redshirt freshman is a versatile athlete who's carried, caught, and tackled on the gridiron.

Texas Tech's head coach, Joey McGuire, is keeping his options open with Robinson. This spring, Robinson is training as a two-way player, splitting time between tight end duties and learning the ropes with the edge defenders. McGuire is keen to see how Robinson's skills translate on both sides of the ball.

McGuire explained, "We're evaluating his movement and capabilities in individual drills. If it works out, we might see him playing some defensive end come preseason camp."

The timing couldn't be better for Tech, as they're currently down a tight end. Senior Jack Esparza is sidelined with a Lisfranc injury, leaving a gap in spring practice. McGuire noted that if Esparza were healthy, Robinson might have been shifted to defense full-time to explore his potential there.

Texas Tech has a history of utilizing players in multiple roles. Last season, tight end Johncarlos Miller stepped in as a situational pass rusher when injuries impacted the lineup. Robinson's dual-role potential is being closely watched, with the possibility of him making a full-time switch to defense depending on his performance.

During a recent practice, Robinson was spotted working with edge defenders, yet still donning the white jersey of an offensive player. This dual participation highlights his unique position on the team.

McGuire is confident in Robinson's enthusiasm for the challenge, saying, "He smiled like crazy. It's a different process, and on defense, you can really unleash your potential, especially off the edge. While he's doing great as a tight end, he might just become a key asset for us at defensive end."
