Texas Tech Suddenly Faces A Cody Campbell Question That Could Matter

With the election of Democrat Gina Hinojosa as Texas governor, the future of Cody Campbell's influential role at Texas Tech hangs in the balance amidst impending changes in university governance.

A political shakeup in Texas could have a direct impact on Texas Tech’s power structure, and Cody Campbell sits right in the middle of it.

Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa, a Democrat from McAllen, Texas, will take over from Greg Abbott early next year, and one of her duties will be naming board members at public universities across the state, Texas Tech included. Those appointments follow a rotation schedule, and Campbell’s current term is set to run through January 31, 2027.

Hinojosa has not publicly addressed Campbell or whether he’ll remain in place at Texas Tech, according to recent reporting by Amanda Christovich at Front Office Sports. Any appointments she makes would still need approval from the state senate, which remains under Republican control.

Campbell, a Texas businessman with an oil and gas background, has already established himself as a major force around Texas Tech athletics. The Texas Tribune reported that he has given at least $26 million directly to the school.

Even if Hinojosa has bigger issues waiting for her in office, the question of Campbell’s seat matters for Texas Tech. It could shape the athletic department’s relationship with the state and its broader direction.

And if Campbell does lose that official role, it would not mean he disappears from the picture. The longtime donor and former Red Raider offensive lineman would still have plenty of sway, especially when it comes to the football program.

The timing adds another layer, coming just after word broke that Brett Yormark will be leaving the Big 12 entirely by early 2027.

Texas Tech May Be Closing On A Massive 2028 Recruiting Win

Texas Tech used a recent game to put its recruiting pitch in front of several high-profile visitors, and one of the most closely watched names in the group was defensive lineman RJ Wyms of The Woodlands. The 4-star prospect has drawn multiple offers from major programs, which makes any momentum in his recruitment worth tracking for the Red Raiders as they keep building out their 2028 class.

Recruiting analysts at Rivals.com have even projected that Texas Tech could land Wyms, a sign that the visit may have carried real weight beyond the usual game-day atmosphere. If the Red Raiders do close on him, he would join already committed prospects Austin Attalah and Luc Normand in a class that is starting to take shape with some real national-level upside. Texas Tech Has 3 Early Storylines Fans Should Watch Tonight

Texas Tech gets back on the floor tonight for its second non-conference game, taking on Bethune-Cookman after opening the season with a win over Jackson State. The early focus is less on the opponent and more on how the Red Raiders are sorting out roles this early in the year, with a few players already standing out as key pieces to watch as the rotation settles in.

Damarion Dennis gave the Red Raiders a lift in the opener by leading the team in scoring, while Donovan Atwell will be looking to put a rough shooting night behind him and find a rhythm. Darrion Williams is also expected to matter in the areas that travel well from game to game, especially defensively and on the boards, giving Texas Tech a chance to keep building habits before the schedule stiffens. Houston Offense Suddenly Has Real Pressure In A Crucial Big 12 Test

Week 9 in the Big 12 brought a familiar mix of standout quarterback play and nagging injury concerns, and the ripple effects are already shaping the next round of games. For Texas Tech, that matters because the conference race keeps tightening, and the Red Raiders are watching the same quarterback-driven swings that have defined so many of the leagues biggest results this fall.

Houston now heads into a crucial Big 12 test with its offense under real pressure to answer, especially with the leagues quarterback situations shifting from one week to the next. Week 10 is set up around those duels and the teams trying to steady themselves through injuries, which only raises the stakes for Houston as it looks to keep pace in a conference where every game seems to hinge on who is healthy and who can handle the moment.
