Texas Tech may have slipped to 16th in the latest AP poll, but their recent performance tells a story of resilience and determination. Despite a setback against Arizona State, the Red Raiders bounced back in style with a dominant 100-72 victory over Kansas State on Saturday. This win marks their fourth in the last five games, bringing their record to 20-7 overall and 10-4 in the Big 12.
Head coach Grant McCasland expressed his gratitude and pride following the win, highlighting the team's unity and the electric atmosphere at the United Supermarkets Arena. "It was really special to be back in the USA," McCasland said, praising the students and fans for their unwavering support. The team showcased their competitive spirit, playing with heart and cohesion.
In their first full game without star forward JT Toppin, who is sidelined for the season with an ACL injury, senior guard Donovan Atwell stepped up in a big way. Atwell lit up the scoreboard with 26 points, sinking 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, and breaking Texas Tech's single-season record for three-pointers with 100. He surpassed Cory Carr's previous record of 94 set in the 1996-97 season.
Atwell wasn't alone in his efforts. Sophomore point guard Christian Anderson contributed 21 points, nine assists, and five rebounds, while junior forward LeJaun Watts added 19 points and six rebounds. Sophomore center Luke Bamgboye, filling in for Toppin, made his presence felt with 12 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
A key factor in the Red Raiders' victory was their dominance on the boards. Even without Toppin, they outrebounded Kansas State 40-28, a testament to their depth and determination.
Looking ahead, Texas Tech remains at home for another Big 12 showdown against Cincinnati on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT), with the game televised on ESPN2.
They then hit the road for a clash with No. 4 Iowa State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
(CT), airing on CBS.
The Red Raiders have navigated a fluctuating journey in the AP poll this season, beginning at No. 10 in the preseason and experiencing various shifts along the way. Their current position at No. 16 reflects both their challenges and triumphs as they continue to fight for prominence in the Big 12.
