Texas Tech softball’s Thursday team outing at Lake Ransom Canyon turned into a frightening accident when two jet skis collided, leaving three players injured and prompting a police investigation.
The school said none of the injuries were critical. Texas Tech Athletics confirmed the crash happened “Thursday afternoon at Lake Ransom Canyon outside of Lubbock as part of a team event.”
In that same statement, the department said, “There were thankfully no critical injuries as a result of the accident. All injured student-athletes have been treated and are expected to make a full recovery.”
The first 911 call came in at 3:38 p.m. Ransom Canyon police, fire, and Texas Parks and Wildlife all responded and opened an investigation.
Lubbock County’s sheriff recorded three adult women with injuries to extremities, legs, and a hand. EMS transported one player to University Medical Center, while the other two were taken in personal vehicles.
Everything Lubbock first reported that the incident involved two jet skis and that the players were split between the hospital and private transportation. D1 Softball and Sports Illustrated later confirmed the school’s account.
Head coach Gerry Glasco addressed the crash Friday, posting, “Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers! Glad everyone is okay and recovering well!” He did not identify any of the three players, and Texas Tech has not released their names either.
The accident hit a program that has been rolling. Glasco’s teams have gone 115-24 over the last two seasons and reached the Women’s College World Series finals both years, losing to Texas each time. What was supposed to be a routine break from softball became a scene with police tape, hospital visits, and a team waiting on answers.
No one has said how the collision happened or who was driving. For now, the only medical update is the school’s assurance that a full recovery is expected.
Texas Tech still has a season ahead. First, it needs those three players back on land.
