Texas Tech added another major name to its recruiting run on Tuesday, landing 5-star offensive tackle Austin Attalah out of Orange, California.
Attalah picked the Red Raiders after trimming his list to Texas Tech, Texas and Southern California. That final stretch came after he collected offers from a long list of heavyweights, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee and Notre Dame.
The 247Sports.com composite ranks Attalah as the No. 27 overall player in the class of 2028 and the No. 3 offensive tackle in the country. He is also rated the No. 1 player in California. At 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds, he already has the kind of frame college programs dream about at tackle.

For Joey McGuire and general manager James Blanchard, the commitment is the latest sign that Texas Tech’s recruiting momentum is still rolling. What once would have felt like a rare win for the Red Raiders has become a familiar pattern.
The run has been building for several cycles. In the class of 2024, 5-star wide receiver Micah Hudson headlined a class that finished No. 26 nationally. Texas Tech kept climbing in 2026, when it signed 5-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo and 5-star edge rusher LaDamion Guyton on the way to a No. 13 national finish.
The 2027 class is already loaded, too. It includes two 5-star defensive linemen: Jalen Brewster, the nation’s top overall player, and edge rusher Anthony Sweeney. Both are set to sign with Texas Tech in December as part of a class currently ranked No. 9 in the country.
Attalah now gives the 2028 cycle its first 5-star anchor for the Red Raiders, and he is the second player overall to commit in that class. If Texas Tech’s recent track record is any indication, he may not be alone for long.

Preseason polls are usually more noise than truth, but they can still tell you plenty about where a program sits in the national conversation. This summer, Texas Tech is showing up in a place Red Raiders fans have not been used to seeing for a while, with several major outlets slotting the team among the countrys best entering the season.
