Texas Tech walked away from its second preseason scrimmage with a clear message from Joey McGuire: the offensive line showed up in a big way.
The Red Raiders’ head coach didn’t hide his excitement after Saturday night’s closed scrimmage, even though the media didn’t get a post-scrimmage press conference or availability. Texas Tech instead posted a brief two-minute recap on social media, and the headline was unmistakable - the offensive front had its best night of camp.
"With what we have faced this camp in our defenses and pressuring the quarterback, I thought tonight was by far the best that the offensive line has looked against some real pressure," McGuire said. "I think that this was their best practice of the year (offseason) by far."
That kind of praise carries weight because the line has been working against what McGuire expects to be the best defensive front in the Big 12 and maybe one of the best in the country. If the offense held up there, it suggests the group is making real progress as camp winds down.
Texas Tech’s front five is built around three returning starters, with senior captain Sheridan Wilson anchoring the middle at center. The Red Raiders also bring back both tackles: Howard Sampson on the left side and Jacob Ponton on the right.
The two guard spots are where the new faces come in. Four-star transfer Jordan Church is set to line up at right guard next to Wilson and Ponton, while Hunter Zambrano is the likely choice on the left side between Wilson and Sampson.
Inside the team, those newcomers have already caught the attention of one of Tech’s biggest defensive stars. Texas Tech All-American defensive tackle A.J. Holmes, the preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, was asked to size up Church and Zambrano.
"I'll just say they strong, strong grip, man" Holmes said. "If you're not coming right with your technique you're going to be locked up, so everyday you gotta put your best foot forward. I look forward to going against those guys, because they bring the best out of me."
The depth behind the starters has also made an impression. D'Anthis Upshaw, Cash Cleveland, Daniel Sill and Felix Ojo have all provided quality support and have pushed the projected starters during camp.
Texas Tech now heads into the final week of preseason work before opening the season against Abilene Christian on Sept. 5 at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, TX.
