Texas Tech Now Faces A Painful Wait On JT Toppin

As All-American JT Toppin focuses on a careful recovery from his ACL injury, Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland outlines the patient path ahead for the star forwards anticipated return to the court.

Texas Tech is still waiting on JT Toppin, and Grant McCasland isn’t rushing the process.

The Red Raiders’ coach said Saturday on the Thetford and Ashby Show on 97.3 FM Lubbock that the All-American forward’s recovery from the ACL tear he suffered in February is moving well, but he made one thing clear: Toppin will not be back at the start of the season.

“I’m just not going to push it, I trust JT,” said McCasland on Saturday. “I know everybody does (want to know), I’m just saying I trust him, period.

The dude wants to play, there’s no doubt about it. He’s always wanted to play, but he’s really smart about it, and Mike (Neal) is the best trainer in all of college athletics.

Those two dudes have a plan.

“I would not anticipate him being ready anywhere near close to the beginning of the season. People can eliminate that from their brains.

I think it will be deeper into the season, and then I just think it’s going to be about when he’s strongest and 100-percent. We’re not putting him out there at 90, we’re gonna put him out there when he’s fully recovered.”

Toppin, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward, put up 21.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last season before the injury ended his year. Texas Tech has already announced that he will return and play for the Red Raiders this upcoming season, but the exact timing remains unsettled.

McCasland said the rehab is on track, even if the timetable is still wide open.

“It’s an open time table, and I know nobody wants to hear that, but I will tell you the progress being made is awesome,” McCasland said. “Does that mean he’ll play early? No, that just means we feel confident about where he is in his recovery.”

For now, the expectation is simple: Toppin is coming back, but not soon. As the season approaches, questions about his return will keep coming, and Texas Tech will keep monitoring his recovery.

Texas Tech Has Real Reason To Believe The Hype This Time

Texas Tech is heading into preseason camp with a level of national attention it has not seen before, and there are reasons the buzz feels different this time. Coaches Joey McGuire and Shiel Wood met with local media ahead of camp and pointed to the rosters depth as one of the biggest reasons for optimism, with the program expecting clear improvements after building toward this moment.

The Red Raiders checked in at No. 12 in the preseason coaches poll, the highest ranking in school history, which only raises the stakes for a team trying to turn promise into proof. The schedule offers an immediate test, with Abilene Christian on Sept. 5 to open the season and conference play starting Sept. 18 against Houston, giving Texas Tech little time to let the hype settle before it has to show what it really has. Texas Tech Opens Camp With Big Expectations And Bigger Questions

Texas Tech is heading into preseason practice with the kind of optimism that usually comes after a good year, and the kind of uncertainty that keeps camp interesting. Media day on Aug. 4 set the table, and the first workout on Aug. 5 marked the real start of a 2025 season shaped by returning starters, portal additions and the lingering impact of quarterback Brendan Sorsbys departure.

The roster looks deeper than it did a year ago, but the early questions are the ones that tend to matter most once pads come on. Will Hammond and Quinten Joyner are among the names to watch for health and availability, while the offensive line is sorting out guard spots and the defense is adjusting after losing key players. Safety could be one of the most competitive areas on the field, which makes the opening stretch of camp feel less like a formality and more like the beginning of a long evaluation. [Read more 🡒]
