Texas Tech doesn’t need to be on the field in one of today’s ranked matchups to come out of Saturday in a better spot. The Red Raiders have their own business to handle first against West Virginia in Lubbock, but if Joey McGuire’s team does what it’s supposed to do at home, the rest of the day could open a path toward a much better place in the next College Football Playoff rankings.
That starts with the obvious: Tech has to beat the Mountaineers. ESPN.com’s Matchup Predictor gives the Red Raiders an 89.4% chance to win, but West Virginia’s offense is no joke.
The Mountaineers are averaging 35.9 points per game, which ranks 21st in the nation. Still, this is the kind of game Tech is expected to control, and if it does, the payoff could be significant when the new rankings come out Tuesday evening.
The first playoff rankings had Texas Tech at No. 15, a placement that didn’t sit well with Red Raider fans. Tech is 7-1, yet several two-loss teams were slotted ahead of it. Saturday gives the Red Raiders a chance to benefit from the chaos elsewhere and maybe climb over some of those teams.
A lot of that comes down to the rooting guide.
In Salt Lake City, Texas Tech should be pulling hard for Utah over No. 9 BYU.
A BYU loss would push the Cougars behind Tech in the Big 12 race, assuming the Red Raiders beat West Virginia. If BYU wins, though, things get messy fast.
Tech, Utah, and BYU could all finish with 8-1 records in conference play, and in that case the Red Raiders would be left out of the Big 12 title game because of the tiebreaker tied to their loss to Cincinnati.
Tech fans also need Missouri to take care of business against No. 7 Texas.
The Longhorns are one of the two-loss teams ranked ahead of the Red Raiders, and a loss in Columbia would put them two games back in the loss column. Texas still has trips remaining to No.
14 LSU and Texas A&M, so a defeat today could leave the Longhorns staring at a fourth loss and a shrinking playoff case.
No. 23 Oregon over No.
12 Ohio State would help too. Ohio State is in a strange spot, sitting outside the playoff picture even with its ranking because one berth is reserved for a Group of 5 team.
The Buckeyes already have two losses, and another one at home could put them on the edge. Their final stretch is no picnic either, with three of their last four games at home, including the season finale against Michigan, and they’ll be without starting QB Julian Sayin for the foreseeable future.
Texas Tech fans should also be watching No. 6 Kentucky at No.
13 Tennessee. The Volunteers are another two-loss SEC team being treated more favorably than the Red Raiders, and that could change if Kentucky beats them at home.
Tennessee still has to go to Texas A&M and host LSU in November before finishing against Vandy, so a loss today would make the road much rougher.
The same logic applies to No. 5 Alabama at No.
14 LSU. Alabama’s resume may not be especially strong, but the committee still placed the Tide at No. 5 in the opening rankings.
Since they seem headed for the playoff anyway, Tech fans might as well root for Alabama to beat LSU in Baton Rouge. If the Tigers fall to 6-3, Texas Tech would jump them in the next ranking if it gets to 8-1 by Sunday morning.
There’s also No. 2 Georgia at No.
10 Ole Miss, another game with direct implications for the Red Raiders. Ole Miss is one of the two-loss SEC teams sitting ahead of Tech, and Georgia can help knock the Rebels down a rung.
Tech needs the Bulldogs to win convincingly. A multi-score Georgia victory would hurt the perception of Ole Miss as an elite team, and that, paired with a strong Tech win, could be enough to move the Red Raiders past the Rebels.
Then there’s the one that always gets attention: No. 1 Miami at No.
11 Notre Dame. The committee and the TV networks want Notre Dame in the 12-team field.
A lot of the country does not. If the Irish lose at home, their playoff case gets a lot shakier.
They already took a marquee loss to BYU, and another high-profile defeat would only make their resume look thinner. After today, Notre Dame’s remaining schedule is Boston College, SMU, and Syracuse - none of which figures to change much.
If the Irish can’t land a signature win against Miami, their path gets awfully narrow. If they do win, though, they’ll be in the playoff picture in a hurry, and that would make it harder for a conference like the Big 12 to get two teams into the field.

Texas Tech Has One Big Concern Entering West Virginia Game
The No. 15 Red Raiders head into their matchup with West Virginia with plenty of offensive confidence, and for good reason. Texas Tech has leaned on quarterback Thomas Castellanos and running back JKoby Williams, while the Mountaineers bring a defense that has struggled to hold up nationally, giving the Red Raiders a chance to keep their attack rolling in a game that should have plenty of scoring opportunities.
But the bigger concern for Texas Tech may be on the other side of the ball, where West Virginias offense can create problems with dual-threat quarterback Michael Hawkins and running back Cam Cook. Add in the injury updates and probable statuses the Red Raiders are monitoring this week, and the matchup carries a little more uncertainty than the rankings suggest. [Read more 🡒]
