Texas Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball teams now know what the 2026-27 Big 12 grind will look like, and the conference calendar gives both programs plenty to circle.
The Lady Raiders get the first league test at home, opening Big 12 play against Colorado on Dec. 20. The Red Raiders wait a little longer, beginning conference action Jan. 2 at Cincinnati.
There’s also an early-season doubleheader to watch in Lubbock on Nov. 5, when the Lady Raiders open the regular season against Charlotte and the men host Bethune-Cookman the same day. Tip times for those games have not been announced.
Several of the marquee Big 12 dates land at United Supermarkets Arena. For the men, the standout home game is a Big Monday meeting with Houston on Feb. 15, part of a matchup that has stayed tight lately with the teams splitting their four meetings over the past two seasons. The arena will also host a Jan. 30 doubleheader, with the women taking on BYU and the men facing UCF.
The Lady Raiders will draw one of their most intriguing home games on Feb. 24, when revamped Oklahoma State comes to town. That one puts 7-foot-1 Texas Tech center Stephanie Okechukwu opposite Audi Crooks, the physical post who transferred from Iowa State to OSU this offseason.
The Red Raiders finish the regular season at home as well, closing things out against BYU on March 5.
Texas Tech’s men also have a demanding nonconference slate before Big 12 play begins, including an Oct. 23 exhibition at Kentucky in Lexington, home dates with Jackson State, Bethune-Cookman, Illinois, Stonehill College, New Orleans, Omaha, Incarnate Word and Mississippi Valley State, plus neutral-site games against Louisville, Oregon/St. John’s, USC and Duke. Their road and neutral stops also include Fort Worth, New York City and Las Vegas before the conference schedule fully takes over.
The women’s nonconference schedule brings its own challenges, starting with an Oct. 18 exhibition against Angelo State in Lubbock. They’ll host Charlotte, Lamar, Auburn, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas Southern and North Florida, while also traveling to Orlando for games against North Carolina, Purdue and South Florida, and heading to St.
Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands for matchups with Air Force and Xavier/Santa Clara.
A Dec. 13 trip to Mississippi State rounds out the preconference portion before Big 12 play begins.

Texas Tech Defense Could Get Timely Boost Before Houston Showdown
Texas Techs defense may be headed for a much-needed lift as the Red Raiders prepare for their Big 12 matchup with Houston. Defensive coordinator Shiel Wood said Brenden Jordan is expected to start returning to action, while also pointing to Trey Whites positive impact when he has been available and the value he brings to the unit.
Wood also gave an encouraging update on Jayden Cofield, who is working back from a serious injury and continues to progress well. Texas Tech heads into its matchup with Houston still trying to get a clearer read on what this offense really is early in the season. The Red Raiders have shown enough to suggest there is firepower here, but the bigger question is how much of the playbook has actually been put on display and how much more is waiting to come as the competition stiffens.
Houston brings a defense that should give Texas Tech a better sense of where the unit stands right now, which is what makes this one so interesting from the Red Raiders' side. Will Hammond Faces A Bigger Texas Tech Test Than Fans Realize
Will Hammond has given Texas Tech a steady start at quarterback to open the 2026 season, completing 76.7% of his passes over two games while averaging 243.5 yards per game with two touchdowns and one interception. The accuracy has been there, but the Red Raiders have largely kept things in front of them, leaning on short throws and check-downs rather than asking Hammond to push the ball downfield very often.
The next step may be less about efficiency and more about volume. Texas Techs running game has not produced enough to take pressure off the passing attack, which means Hammond could be asked to shoulder a bigger load as the schedule stiffens, starting with a key matchup against No. 22 Houston.
