In the Alabama Crimson Tide's clash with the Hofstra Pride, early concerns were palpable. Coach Nate Oats struggled to find the right combinations to distance his team from the 13th-seeded squad.
But then, Labaron Philon Jr. caught fire, reminiscent of his 2025 March Madness performance, and everything started to gel. The result?
A ticket to the Round of 32, where they’ll face the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Philon Jr. was pivotal in turning the tide for Alabama. The first half was tight, with the Crimson Tide holding a narrow 37-35 lead.
Defensive adjustments were necessary, and Philon was the catalyst. Playing 36 minutes, he dismantled Hofstra’s defense, leading Alabama to a commanding 90-70 victory.
Philon Jr. shared insights into their success, emphasizing preparation and determination, as reported by CBS Sports.
"Like I said in the pregame ritual, we came ready and I think we prepared the best. I feel like all the coaches were ready.
So, we were ready to get out there. We got rid of the first game, so we just have to be ready to move on.
It's just about the grittiness. I mean, everybody wants to fight hard.
We want to win games, we came here to prove something. I think it's close early but we kind of pulled away," Philon expressed.
Coach Oats crafted the offense around Philon Jr., who delivered an impressive 29 points, shooting 56% from the field and hitting six of seven free throws. His threat from all scoring areas was evident, sinking three of seven from beyond the arc.
Philon Jr. wasn’t just a scoring machine; he facilitated the offense with seven assists and dominated defensively with eight rebounds and three steals, showcasing his all-around game.
Looking ahead, Texas Tech awaits in the next round. Philon Jr. remains confident, highlighting Alabama's depth compared to the Jaylen Petty-led No. 5 Red Raiders.
"We got a lot of depth and the next team we play, they are going to be really good. So, we got to be ready because they play just like us," Philon noted.
Alabama's March Madness journey is gathering momentum. With Coach Oats steering them to an Elite Eight appearance last year, and Philon Jr. emerging as a standout star, the Crimson Tide could be poised for a deep tournament run, despite their four-seed status.
