Joel Klatt's Texas Ranking Says Everything

FOX analyst Joel Klatt raises eyebrows with his No. 7 ranking of Texas, stirring debate over their spot in this week's college football hierarchy.

Joel Klatt’s latest top 10 came with a few choices that will get people talking, and the biggest one is Texas landing at No. 7.

With the first College Football Playoff rankings set to drop Tuesday night, the sport has already spent nine weeks in full-blown chaos. Only three unbeaten teams are left standing: Miami, Utah and UCLA.

And both Miami and Utah are staring at major tests this weekend, with the Hurricanes facing Notre Dame and the Utes meeting BYU. That means the opening playoff picture could look very different again a week from Tuesday.

Klatt, who breaks down the previous week’s action on FOX and calls the Big Noon game each week with Gus Johnson, released his new top 10 after Week 9:

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Kentucky
  4. Texas
  5. Utah
  6. UCLA
  7. Notre Dame
  8. Indiana
  9. Georgia
  10. Miami

Texas at No. 7 is the headline here, and Klatt didn’t shy away from it.

“I know everyone’s going to be upset about this, but you know what? I don’t care,” Klatt said.

“I’ve got Texas at seven. If you look at their strength of schedule, their wins, if I was in the committee room, I would have them up there.

I would have them up there.

“They took care of Mississippi State 31-3…. They had 280 total yards.

Arch took five sacks in that game. They’ve got to get better than that.

Again, if it’s not an Arch centric offense, they’re a better offense. They’ve got to figure out how to run the football first..”

BYU, meanwhile, was the notable omission from Klatt’s top 10 despite still being in the mix. He placed the Cougars on his bubble list along with Ole Miss, LSU, USC and Wake Forest.

“BYU is just outside of my top 10,” said Klatt. “Kind of a disappointing performance against Arizona State.

That Arizona State team 4-3. You beat them by seven at home.”

Klatt said Ole Miss has a strong resume, even with losses to Florida and Texas. He also noted that LSU and Ole Miss could work their way into the conversation over the final four weeks of the season. Wake Forest and USC, he added, can pile up points and still control their own fate if they keep winning.

Texas Tech Has A Worry Fans Cant Ignore Before Illinois

Texas Tech got the result it needed against Bethune-Cookman, but the 76-58 win did not exactly quiet every concern heading into a much bigger test. Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn carried the Red Raiders with 25 points, while Cruz Davis chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds, giving the offense enough punch to get through a game it was expected to control.

The bigger worry was how the Red Raiders got there. Free-throw shooting and three-point accuracy both lagged, and those are the kinds of issues that can become expensive in a hurry against No. 3 Illinois. Texas Tech has a win in hand, but the next step is a far tougher one, and the margin for sloppiness is about to shrink fast. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Tech Is Showing One Early Strength Fans Should Love

Texas Techs second win of the season, a 76-58 result over Bethune-Cookman, offered another early look at what this group can already hang its hat on at home. The Red Raiders have been steady on the defensive end through their first two games in Lubbock, and the offense showed a little more rhythm after halftime, especially from beyond the arc.

Cruz Davis has emerged as one of the more important pieces in the opening stretch, affecting the game in a variety of ways even as the scoring load has shifted from one player to the next. For a team still sorting out its offensive pecking order, that kind of balance can be encouraging, and it leaves Texas Tech with a useful early sign of what might travel well once the schedule gets tougher. Baylors Interim Coach Suddenly Has Real Pressure On This Iowa State Game

Week 10 in the Big 12 has a way of sharpening every sideline decision, and for the leagues coaches, the margin for error is getting thin. Utahs Morgan Scalley is staring at a rivalry game against BYU that could help lock up a spot in the Big 12 Championship, while Joey McGuire and Texas Tech are still hanging around the title picture and need a little help elsewhere to keep that path alive.

For Baylor, interim coach Joe Klanderman has a different kind of pressure on him, with the Bears still chasing the wins they need to reach bowl eligibility. Iowa State is the next hurdle, and in a week where several coaches are feeling the heat, this one suddenly carries real weight for a program trying to stabilize its season and keep its postseason hopes moving in the right direction.
